Finished My Sifter

I finished my sifter that was copied off the one CJ uses with a few modifications. It measures 23" in diameter, with 7/32" holes. If you notice, it has a spot coped out on top to hold my scoop or detector and works excellent.

When I ordered the plate from McMaster Carr it didn't end up being what I thought, ( my fault ), I wanted 3/16" holes but I thought the "open area " was more than it was. Also, I wasn't crazy about it being grey instead of white ( notice the back ) , again my fault.

Shipping was so high and the plate cost $64.00 that I wasn't about to send it back. So, I bit the bullet and drilled out all the holes from 3/16" to 7/32", sanded the top with very coarse sand paper and sprayed it white.

This was put to the test the other day and worked great. Dumping rocks of all sizes along with sand, it handled the heavy loads with no problem and sifted rapidly. The holes are small enough that I easily caught 22 calibar projectiles.

Everything is nylon or plastic, except for the S/S nut I'm using for a toggle for my lead sinker weight, that's going to be changed to a nylon nut as soon as I get to a hardware store.

Even with the nut, I was still able to run my coil over the sifter with no problem.

I like it Frank!!

Built like bull and almost bomb proof!!

You made a couple of creative changes that are improvements in my view, such as the place to rest you scoop, using chafing shields to protect the foam floaty and a carrying handle.

It's as close to perfection as a sifter can get.

Regards,

CJ

All the bells and whistles ..... cool build. I seen Clive had a pretty nice one made out of a bread carrier that looked made to last as well.

fsa46,

nice sifter, i've been using one for many years and wouldn't go without it period. i will offer a couple of tips that i use. first get a small anchor, like a duck decoy weight or something similiar. put it on about 6 ft of cord and attach to your sifter on opposite side that your tow cord is attached. throw it over and it will keep the sifter from "crowding" you while you're working down wind, down current or down wave. make a large loop in the cord right where it attaches to the "anchor" and attach an alum carinbiner? so you can clip it to you sifter during transport. the other suggestions that i would make is get a vibra probe pinpointer for locating the targets in gravel matrix its way easier then picking up your detector to locate targets. i put the holster right on the sifter so i can move the probe away until it shuts off because it will mess with most detectors if its to close while its on. it also is way easier to carry while its on the sifter.

heres a link to a picture of my sifter

Thanks for the tips Steve but I already have those bases covered. If you notice in the first picture there are two 10 oz sinkers, the 20 oz takes care of that problem. As far as the pointer, I use a ProPointer and when I dump gravel and rocks into the sifter and can't find the target, out comes the pointer. As mentioned in my post, this sifter was copied off the one CJ uses with a couple modifications.
