Does anyone know if we can post our finds on this forum? It tells us this is not a place to post finds of the day but they are posted on other forums so was wondering. It would be nice to show what we find as we progress in use and experience.

There is one item in particular that I find at home sites dating from the 1770s-1820 (or so), that to me, the sound has just never matched what one would expect by looking at the target. It makes sense why this happens, but can you guess what it is? I found about 10 this year.

And if you're not digging those itty bitty sounds at the older sites, you may be missing these. Almost every one I dig surprises me because I'm expecting a very small button. Of course they sound like this having the open end, and most likley lie at a weird angle.

do you know at what point they stopped using them?? There is a site I hunted ONCE and I found a jews harp, an engraved knife handle with copper rivets, and 2 arrowheads, and I forget what else at the moment. Didn't stay long. I'm trying to get an idea of the age of the site.

That's tough to say Wes. They do fall over many years and my guess would be right from the 1770s to about the 1820s. A jews harp is a very good sign to slow down, dig every target, best determine what type of site it is, THAN POUND IT.
I think I would be trying that spot again Wes. Here, if a site has old targets we don't stop digging until we get the very last one, or at least that's what we attempt to do.

I'm planning to head back and hunt the site properly. I found it when I first got my old machine and didn't know how to use it very well. The site is about 4 hours from me though where my family lives, so it'll have to wait until I head down that way.
I figured the site probably dated back pretty far. Sadly someone has been dumping all kinds of trash back in the field right on top of the site, so there is all kinds of modern junk metal mixed in. I guess I'm going to have to go REALLY slow.
