Finds Update from Kaikoura, Nz and 6 inch coil Question

Hi there. I have only taken the detector out about 6 times since Christmas. The weather has been pretty awful and I have been working 10 hr days 6 days a week mostly.... and to top it off I got a big swollen infected foot and couldn't walk for 2 weeks........

So between Xmas and New Years I went to the beach twice with some of my family, I got 14 dollars in 1 and 2s. I then went down the beach further and got an 1860s traders token. It was fairly corroded but had enough detail on it to read it.

Then about a month ago I went camping in the Marlborough Sounds to a place called French Pass. The first Coin I found was when i dint have my detector it was a pre 1936 penny stuck to a lump of iron in the remains of an old wharf, I chipped it out with my rock hammer. I detected 2 bays, but both very exposed and deep sand. I got 2 dollars, another 2 pennies, plenty of lead heads, and a cool marine brass deck air vent off a launch.

And then a couple of days ago I went out to the beach because we had a real good storm, and it flattened the beach, which when i went for a walk sans detector I found two 2 dollar coins on the surface with a pile of old useless decimal currency. So once my foot was better I went out after work and got
$8.40 in coins in a couple of hours over two days, not much but along with a UK pound coin, 1933 50% silver sixpence 1950 penny, 1947 shilling and a 1951 florin as well as a nice silver ring. Also got heaps and heaps of old useless coins which were phased out in 2006.

Question: My xt 50 can use the 6 inch coil provided by Minelab. I was wondering which of the 6 inch coils to get, and what the difference between them is. I am mainly into coin shooting and general detecting.

anyway here are some pics

Nice assortment of finds. As to the two 6-inch coils for the X-TERRA.... either will work with your X-50. The 6-inch concentric is 7.5 kHz. The 6-inch DD is 18.75 kHz. I find very little difference in depth of detection. The DD separates targets better and is more stable in highly mineralized soil. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks Randy......... I think that the 18.75 kz DD sounds good, I thought it was the better choice although I heard it didnt get the depth. But working in highly mineralized soil will be better. So for the size, do you think that the DD will get 6-8 inches deep? and will it work on the salty wet beach sand? I do need to get out detecting more!!!!!
I saw all the guys in the Thames river with these tiny coils!!!! and they were getting in between iron lumps and digging coins.

Hi Moa,

Glad to see you are back on deck, I have the 6" and the 6x10 DD HF coils &and they seem to work good on the beaches even the ones up here with patches of black sand.

A couple of finds that I made on a local beach were down a good 8" and also a old house site have had to dig a couple of finds down around the 6" +

With the old decimal coins I believe that you can still cash them in with the Reserve bank, haven't done so myself as I don't have a lot, but the collection is growing.

I have just got permission to hunt another houses site that the hose has been moved so now just a bare section, will let you know what treasures I find
Cheers
