Finds so far

Here are my finds so far. I purchased & received the Explorer one week ago, Saturday. I havent found anything old, yet. Everything's from the 1970's, 80's, and yes, the 90's. The watch part I found might be older, but there's no way to tell for sure. There's also a flattened piece of copper, probably a penny that was ran over by a train. I found it 3 inches deep a near the tracks. The "dogtag" looking piece of metal does not bend easy and says "1996" on it but nothing else. I found that by another set of train tracks in a different town. Total so far: 13 pennies, 4 dimes, 2 quarters, 2 nickels.
I guess I'm just not looking in the right places; plus the area I live in isnt all that old either. I live in Manchester, its a suburb of St. Louis. St. Louis and St. Charles are old cities, but all the suburbs really arent that old. Its really hard to find a 100 year old building in the burbs. For those of you who live in Missouri, I've looked in Kirkwood, Clayton, St. Charles, Valley Park, and Ladue. Which pretty much makes up the old cities for the area. I havent looked downtown yet.
I have been doing research though, online and at the library. St. Charles has been around since 1763, and st. louis since 1809 or so. The only problem is that pretty much all of st charles is considered "historic" and its all either state owned land or privately owned. There arent any parks or condemned houses where I could take a quick look. The old train station and the land around it are fenced in and big signs surround the area which read "missouri state park". Which really means "you cant dig here". Rats. I bet there's thousands of dollars worth in coins there, and it just kills me that I cant look for them.
Since I dont work Mondays (but I do work Saturdays) I spent the entire day driving around to the different places that I marked down as being old or historic land. I couldnt find very many parks or public places, so in most cases, I couldnt dig. It sucks! I dont want to go door to door asking if I can dig around; I just think that sounds bad. I've seen the various letters people have made up for this purpose, but I dont really like that idea either.
I've only lived in this area since October of last year. I moved here from Minneapolis, which is also a very very old city, and there are MANY places where I could look for old coins. Plus all the lakes with beaches.... I wish I was there now....
I'm hoping that I can find some good places to search; I really want to find some old coins & rings. Then at least I can be happy that I purchased another detector, and my girlfriend will stop giving me weird looks. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Thanks for the info and what you found. I too find it hard to go up to someone I don't know and ask them if I can detect on their property.
I feel very intimidated. I hate rejection. I have asked people before and some of the looks I got were pretty neat...if I just had a camera when I asked them!
Maybe if you found someone in your area that already has their feet in doors that would partner with you?
I'm trying to build up the guts to ask permission to detect some old haunts in Ohio where I used to live. It shouldn't be this hard. Maybe if I do it enough it won't be so hard.
Yo might look at joining some historical societies in your area. That might help you get your foot in some doors that way?

No guts, no glory! suck it up & go knocking...or
if the place is good enough (like an old church), offer a donation if you can.

Metal Detecting Clubs!!! There are a few detecting clubs around the area. Go to Losttreasure.com and go to the link marked clubs. There is one located in florisant, mo. I also had a club to just recently. Found I would rather be with friends instead of members. I try to get out weekly, and I find alot of old stuff. I found my oldest silver coin in a church yard around O'Fallon, Mo. It was an 1876 silver dime in VG condition. I have found alot of older coins but none around here, mainly while I was on the road with my company. I usually hunt churches or parks, but will knock on a door or two. The latest has produced about 50 wheaties. I think someone lost a roll of them years back. It also has produced a few silver mercs. and a nice childrens silver ring. I am always looking for reasons to go hunting, give me an email and I will help you along.
KEEP ON SWINGING.....
