This field has produced some very nice relics and old coins, as old as 300 years however, the site is a 1000 year old farm/hotel and I
 
the permit is land specific. When I file a request I have to send a map with the plots of land marked where I want to hunt. The permit is a hassle but, it's free and good for 1 year. HH, Mike
 
Your "whatsit" appears to be an inlay that goes on the top of the wrist of a rifle or pistol.(behind the barrel and tang)
 
that would make sense, there was an old gun factory in this town from the late 1600s to the early 1850s as well. Thanks for the ID help! HH, Mike
