For you new guys and gals, some times this is how it goes. Not always gold and silver. Us old Pirates fully understand how some days are Golden and some days are trashy.

Hey Gulf Hunter,

I'm still a water hunting newbie. What exactly happens with the sand through the winter?

When I was at the coast two weeks ago, it was all soft, even in areas where I know it was better before. Does all of this soft sand get washed out for some reason, exposing the harder bottom a little better? If so, what causes this?

Thanks.

Hobbes, in my opinion the sands build through the summer, causing the treasure to sink deeply within the strata quickly, beyond detection range, unless recovered quickly. In the winter, the passing northers erode the sands off or cut the beach, in extreme cases. The low pressures are replaced by prodominantly higher air pressures which firm the sands instead of low pressures, which make it squishy and soft, savvy? My #'s increase through the winter consequently.

I have been water hunting for just over 5 months. I have had moderate sucess. Several Silver rings, lots of coins and ,many interesting items. I come to this forum and see guys like you with the experience who are always showing gold items which I dream about. Today I was headed to my favorite beach and I thought: do experience guys like you ever a junk day with no rings. I had an OK day, no gold again, 15 coins,pliers,12 lead weights etc. and junk items. Then I see your post about your junk only hunt. It encourages me even more to know my gold will come and I am doing OK over all. Thank you for you honesty.

You told me 2 key things that I can almost guarantee your eventual success. You are finding coins and lead. Those 2 targets will eventually land the gold. When you find some of either, work the area HARD!
