Went and done a little digging yesterday. Managed to find a few nice relics out in Resaca. My finds from yesterday were part of a brass spur, piece of lead with a square nail hole through it,old over all button, and what I believe to be an attempt to counterfeit a shield nickel. Any thoughts or info on it will be greatly appreciated,Jonathon.

way to go, johnnyreb! nice finds there. i don't know if it's an attempt to counterfeit a u.s. nickel, but it's neat! wtg, and hh,

Good job Jonathan! That beats my fired spencer and box finial from Resaca Saturday morning.....but I still enjoyed the hour or so that I got to spend in the woods. Nice finds!

Everything on the nickel piece is reversed. Is it made of lead? Looks like whoever made the item placed a nickel on top of the material and then took a hammer to it to create an impression. I did that as a kid but using two pennies.

It may have been used as a poker/gaming chip, obviously made from a genuine nickel.

However, with the first shield nickel coming into circulation in 1866, what you may have is a (genuine) counterfeit piece created out of desperation after Sherman's hordes lay waste to much of Georgia and the Carolinas.

Money was tight and food even tighter. You may have a piece from the Reconstruction Era that reflects this.

Either way, neat piece.

Richard

Thanks for the congrats everyone. Yeah it is made out of lead. I was looking at the front side again yesterday and saw some of the stripes from the shield. It is a neat piece in my book,Jonathon.
