finding target in dry, powdery soil

In the past, I haven't done much relic hunting this time of year, but with my new 3030, I've been going some to be able to use the machine. When hunting CW relics in a field with dry soil, I notice that when the target is out of the hole, it has a tendency to sift down into the grass under the loose dirt, making the target harder to find than when the soil is moist and holds the target within. I wondered about cutting a small piece of thick plastic to lay beside the hole to put the loose dirt on, which might keep the target from sifting down into the grass, making a smaller object easier to find. Has anybody else tried this? I might try it this weekend.

An old cloth rag works better.

Wad up the rag and stick it in your pocket. When you find something, take the rag out of your pocket, lay it on the ground and put the dirt on it.

After you've located the target, pick up the rag with the dirt on it and use it to pour the dirt back in the hole.

A small Frisbee works well also. You can also drill some small holes to sift out the fine stuff.
I drilled a small hole in edge and attach to belt with a small clip or bungee.

Handkerchief works great. Thin and light, drys quick if you use it in the wetter month also.

I have been using an old shelf liner that is perforated, it is a very spongy material and works great. The dirt doesn't stick to it and it folds up well. So far it is the best thing I have found.
