Finding old coins ?'s

For those of you that have found 17th or 18th century coins, or even early 1900's where have you found them ? Are they deep in the ground ? Can these coins be found 3-8 inches in the ground ?
Thanks !
-Andrew

:usaflag:I would imagine that you could, so long as the ground has never been disturbed or hunted. But then again, I found a '43 half dollar in a pile of dirt that had been relocated. Anything is possible in this hobby. Good luck !

Hi Andrew I found an 1836 Large cent about 3-4 inches deep and I've found 1930's and 40's coins 5-6 inches deep. Dont' ask me why but they can fall about anywhere. Freezing and thawing has to have an effect but I'm not sure what it would be. If you've ever lived on a farm you know that early in the spring your field will have a new crop of rocks that werent there last fall, so go figure. Good luck and happy hunting.

I have found 1870's 1890's coins between 3 and 5 inches deep. The old coins I find are usually in this depth range. I also find 1970's coins at similar depths, so who knows!

You can't ever figure it out. I've found 19th century coins at 4 inches and then a few steps away a 30 year old clad coin at 8 inches. Today I found a 1912 dime at around 2 inches. 1957 quarter at 6 inches. 1916 wheat at over 8 inches. I've stopped trying to figure it out. Just dig everything, especially iffy (one way) signals at the right locations and you'll find those old coins. Don't fret if you're digging loads of rusty iron nails or other trash. The most successful hunters dig it all.
