Finding my Dad's ring on Saturday

Hello,
My X-Terra 70 came in on Monday, and it is perfect. I just love this machine. Everyone was right, it is a wonderful machine. I'm going to try and find a Thunder Bird ring that one belonged to my Dad on Saturday. He lost it almost 40 years ago throwing a watermelon rind off of the back porch. I've not been able to practice much yet due to weather and a busy schedule. If anyone has any tips on what target ID numbers silver rings tend to be, any info would be greatly appreciated. I do not have any silver rings to practice with. Hopefully my next post will be a pic of his ring.
Thanks

Congrats on your new X-Terra! I am sure you will enjoy it very much. Silver will normally be a higher number anywhere from 38-44,46. I think all but one of my silver rings have come in the 40-44 range. Having said this it would be a good idea to dig all high tone signals. You really never know, Beale.

Thanks Beale,
I will look for that range. He threw it by their old burn pile, so I just need a little something to go by.
Have a great day.

Really you have it easy. Most people don't have a clue there they lost anything. It would seem to me you could narrow your search grid to like a 30 ft x 30 foot square to start off. Stand where your Dad stood and look toward the burn pile. Now if your Dad was able to toss the rind to the pile then the rind won't be as far. This is because the ring would of had some resistance coming off his finger. I would bet it's not very far from where he stood. I would start out and reject all notches below 12. Then dig all targets. Make sure you overlap your sweeps by no more than 50%. Search your grid in both directions. In such a small area it won't take you too long to dig the trash out that could be masking the ring.

Thanks khouse,
I will do that. I appreciate the input.

I know you will find it. Don't give up. I can't imagine the feeling you'll have when you hold it in your hands. Good luck to you.

I'd expect it to hit between a dime and a quarter, based on your description of it being silver. I'd be digging any repeatable non-conductive signals (like I always do) as you never know what other treasures may be lurking in the ground. And expect to find the ring in the upper 30's or lower 40's. Best of luck to you and post us a picture after you find it. HH Randy

Congrats on the detector! I would put it in all metal mode, sens around 22 and dig everything above -6 and learn the machine as you hunt. -6 is almost a guaranteed piece of iron, -4 or -8 can be a target just out of reach of the detector. Good luck and let us know what you come up with, that ring would be an awesome find! HH, Mike

Good luck with the x-70 . Make sure you keep us updated with your Dads ring, Hope you post a picture if you find it! Good luck.

If your site is trashy then search in 2 directions at 90 degrees to each other. You might get a hit in one direction and not in an other if iron is about. I have found non-ferrous objects close beside iron by sweeping trashy ground several times from several directions.

Or just dig everything on all metal.

I would look for the number 36 and 38. I have found with the xterra 70 3 silver rings so far and all of these have fall between those two numbers but who knows. Just dig everything like the pros say. Good Luck!!!

I want to thank everyone for their input and encouragement. I was sadly unable to try and find it today, due to the wet ground conditions. The person residing at the house now did not want the yard torn up, so I was asked to come back when it dries up. I will try again when the weather is better. At least this will give me a chance to practice now.
Thanks to everyone again.

I like hunting at nice yards when it wet. Not sopping wet though. Don't wait until it's real dry to go back. I hope they're just not making an excuse not to let you search. I hope you get the go ahead next time!

make sure you explain the sentimental value of the ring. And if the one you are searching for looks like this one, it reads a 42 when scanned from the face and 38 when scanned across the band.

Good luck in your search.

P.S. ....... I know! My thumb looks nasty! Darn cold weather cracks!!!!!

Thanks Digger,
I'll bet that is like my Dad's. Thanks so much for the info. I'm sure the land owner will let me back on to look for it. The ground was pretty nasty, so I can understand where he was coming from. Thanks so much for giving me those number, that will help out so much. My Dad is going to go with me when I go next time, to help show where he believes it may be. He will hopefully be healed up enough from his surgery, (His 3rd one after ankle replacement.) This would mean a lot to him and me. He told me over the weekend it was given to him from his Grandad, who found it while trash collecting. He was a trash collector all of his life, and just loved to find treasures while collecting. Maybe that's where I get it from. He worked until his late 70's. I'm not sure if he had just recently found it when he gave it to my Dad all that time ago, or not. Dad told me it's about 35 or 40 years ago he lost it. I'm going to print the pictures you sent to show him, to see if it is the same.
Thanks to everyone for all of the support and help. This is the best forum on the Internet. You are all really good people.

Thanks khouse,
Yes, I'm sorry if I led to the impression my Dad had passed. I'm fortunate enough to have him still here with me.
Thanks
