Finding more with my Excal 1000

Gobyman

New member
Hey All,

I'm new to this forum and also pretty new to MD'ing. Started this Great hobby about a month and half ago (needed something to keep busy after retiring from the USAF 21yrs) Anyways, started out with a used Trident Viper and wasn't finding much except for clad (about $10 worth). So I found a used 2005 Excal 1000 for $725 that came with the straight shaft with SS arm brace, upgraded knobs and knob guard. So on my first day using my excal ( using reverse discrimination method) on 13 Aug I hit my first ring! ( Leo Ring -1.56 tw carat diamonds with platinum setting and 14K band, appraised at $ 9,000.00) I've been getting a lot more finds since using my Excal as you can see in the pic's. Also got my first silver on 20 Aug and a little more today. Well sorry for the long story, hope you like the pic's and HH.

John

Gobyman, Man I am Impressed with your hunting...fast learner....And that is One nice ring!. 1.56 {POW, I would have fallen over on that one}.

If you have not already just reverse your excal, putting the pod upside down..Head phone cord on the down side........adjust your arm cuff to where all you have to do is reach {2 inchs} over with your detector hand and change from PP to disc then back...Also you may want to bunge the HP cord, to keep the stress off of it, and I change that about once a month to a different location on the HPcord to help from wearing one spot out

Congradulations on your 21 Years Retirement with the USAF ...................................Joe/Obn

Nice loot !!
Good luck

Hey All,

Thanks for great comments.

OldBeechNut, thank you as well for posting GREAT videos, as you can see they definitely helped me! Also followed your advice on flipping the main pod around, but I did use a little different mounting, but everything works and yes it is alot easier switching between PP and Disc now with one hand. As you can see, I also got the same scoop as you also with the side handle on the right (21 yrs of military training, you learn to pay attention to details) but as the saying goes, copying someone is the best form of flattery. But in all seriousness, thanks again Joe and keep up the great work with your videos! As for the pic's I found a good use for the stock shaft handle, I found an old guitar stand at a goodwill store for $3 and hacked off the top bracket and mounted on the end of my Excal as a stand and used the bottom of the stand with my old stock shaft and made a stand to hold my excal when not in use. Also upgraded my viper trident to a straight shaft as well using a aluminum walker I also found at the goodwill for $5. Also used the rubber grip from the stock shaft to add some more cushioning to the SS arm bracket as you can see in the pic's. Last but not least, as you can see in the pic of my old and new scoop, I had to do a lot of modifying on my old scoop just to make it last till I got my new SS scoop, I call it my Frankenstein scoop, but it was the scoop I was using when I found the ring, so guess it is kinda of a 'lucky" scoop too.

Fredo,

I prefer PP instead of DISC because it gives you better depth and just seems to zero in a lot quicker on targets and now that OldBeechnut gave me the advice about flipping the pod around, it makes it that much easier and quicker switching between PP and Disc. I'm sure OldBeechNut would probably have a better answer than mine.

Well thanks again everyone and I'm grateful to be apart of this great hobby with you all. HH

Great hunting Gobyman..And some fine workmanship on the hardware! It is hunters like you that push forward with new ideas..that all of us can learn from..I learned almetal from CJC..digging better from max...Love the stands..great idea...but I see something in the back ground of your pic that gives away why you are a excellent craftsman...Looks like a HD in there...? We have 2 things in common!

Man that scoop is a killer on the deep-es..used it alot in my last outing...I can see yours is ready...Keep us posted..on your finds. Keep em those rings coming!

A QUOTE FROM BARRYNY on Almetal tells it all..and he is a 80 Day Rookie.........Amazing

I have been hunting in AM (water/wet sand) then doing the checking in Disc for my last month's outings. Like Kered says above I listen for faint signals. Many times faint signals in AM bring no response when you switch to Disc until you remove some inches of sand. Today I picked up at least 3 good coin targets very deep that had no signal in Disc. John, you are absolutely right saying that any strong signal heard in AM will also be heard in Disc (so the switch and check routine could theoretically waste some time) but it's the faint signals we're after (and they are the signals your excal competition isn't hearing either). However, you really need to concentrate in AM as the ongoing drone of the threshold can lull your hearing into complacency - as opposed to the bugles blaring when you hit a target while in Disc.

Also, since AM sounds off with the coil being stationery, then coil swing can be somewhat forgiving when hunting AM - I sometimes hear a threshold break on the outer part of my swing and when I stop to check it out, sometimes the center of the target is 12+ inches further away from that outer swing - wow that's good territory coverage - you can move faster as I believe the target response is faster. So the combination of hitting deeper signals, hitting signals outside the realm of the swing and forgiving swing/faster sweep makes AM hunting desirable for some. I used regular Disc hunting today for a bit and I find that I am so used to AM that I keep thinking that I am missing targets by not hunting AM.

Can not be said any better...thanks BarryNY
Discriminate has it place as I will show in my next video........Joe/Obn

Hey OldBeechnut,

Great quote about using AM with the Excal. Thanks for compliment on my work. You got a great eye too, seeing what was in the background. Unfortunately their not my bikes, but my dads and moms. I did learn alot though growing up watching my dad work on his 30+ HD's he had over the years. I got my tool skills working F-4's and C-5 aircraft in the USAF. But just to give you some eye candy, here's some picks of my Dads 99 Indian and his HD Heritage. The HD Sportster is my Moms. Let me know when you post you next video. HH
