Finding military encampments

Hi Folks,

I`m in Central New york State, about 30 miles north of Syracuse and on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario, and I`m new to detecting.

I know that there is alot of military history in this area and would love to be able to take my 7 yr old son out and find a few relics. The question is, how does anyone find out where, besides the forts and battlefield monuments, there may have been significant skirmishes or camps that might give up relics except for the general geographic info that is found in history books. I enjoy reading and sleuthing and am anxious to get into the research. I`m not asking anyone to lead me to their honeyhole, please just give me a clue how to get started on the research.

Thanks, Russ

Russ, here's some tips to get you started. Research is the most important thing to do. You can find all kinds of useful imfo in local history books of your area. You can find these at your local library and at local bookstores. If it's Civil War history then you can try searching the Official Records or the Civil war( The War Of The Rebellion ) You can access these on the internet. You can also find old newspapers at the library that might give you leads to encampments. Maps can lead you to military sites too! There are bunches and bunches of civil war maps that give great imfo. Barnes and Noble bookstore carries a large Civil War atlas full of stuff for $20.00. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott,

Thanks a ton for the pointers. Some of the things you mentioned like old newspapers seem so obvious but they never occurred to me. I've never really researched anything through the papers, I guess that I'm really out of my element here but I'll learn.

Where would I find maps with info about military sites? My guess is a large public library? Anywhere on line?

Thanks again.

Russ

Russ:

Check with Dave@Dixie re my book, "Finding Civil War Campsites in Rural Areas". It probably has most of what you are looking for. It's cheap on purpose.

Here's a few to try.....
Do a google search for your county and state, then go to search within results to add more keywords to narrow it down further.* EXAMPLE *
your county or town, state
then search within these results for civil war or war of 1812 etc. etc. etc. and keep narrowing it down. You can also access old maps and military maps through these searches. ( The key here is not to get overwhelmed by all of the results/ keep narrowing it down ) If it's civil war you are researching I would highly recommend the The Official Military Atlas Of The Civil War. It a great investment for just a little over $20.00 at Barne's and Noble book stores. It can be used in conjunction with the Official Records of the Civil War. As far as maps are concerned do the same as above, county, state and then "old maps", "military maps' "topo's" "ETC." . This should get you going and if you have anymore questions give me an e-mail. HH

Thanks Dave, I'll check out your book."It's cheap on purpose." Very cool!

Thanks again Scott, I'm going to try Google right now.
