finding gold coins

While working for "Treasure" magazine, I did some extensive research on the subject. By reading articles which had appeared in all the various treasure magazines regarding LOST FROM CIRCULATION (not jewelry finds) of SINGLE (not caches) gold coin finds, I was able to determine that 90% of SINGLE gold coin finds are $5.00 gold pieces. They register from 50 to 55 on the scale of the MXT. (Which, bummer, is also much of the screwcap range.) So, when detecting at a site which saw activity prior to 1933 (the year US gold coins were withdrawn from circulation) be SURE to dig "screwcap" signals. I, and others, have found $5.00 gold pieces using this method, which has been published in several magazines. Hope this helps; HH jim

Yep, and a 2 1/2 well read at a 31. But this can all vary due to many things. If the area is a shaved yard in an old town/location, dig all signals.

I have a half eagle (10$) and it shows 62--65--67 on the vdi. That is an air test though and probably will change with changing soil conditions.Hope this helps you ..... Gene

Found this one 9/11/05 in Northern Ca. using my MXT At four inches it gave a very weak pulltab. Once out of the ground it gave a very strong ring VDI. Dan
