Finding Gold chains of all sizes!!!!!

Jim Robertson

Well-known member
Not sure where to post this. But the age old question finding GOLD chains???? Has anyone ever tried the Eureka Gold for Gold chains on the beach????? It seems like the 60 khz would be hot enough. I would love to know. Thanks Jim

The problem with gold chains is dependent on size and kt. Some units read each link as a seperate part and don't sound off. While others determine the whole and scream. I used the E Gold many years ago for awhile but never found a single chain. Maybe the areas or maybe just not enough use??? Hope someone with some pics chimes in??? I would like to know the answer as I've found gold chains, even parts, with many units in the past-John

Well...I hunt gold chains...I dream about them at night, truthfully... I Focus up on them...and hit the field with their signals in mind...

These 3 were found within 10 miles of my house..along with all sorts of gold rings, in a heavily hunted environment...I've been hunting for 4 yrs coming up April...all gold found within this radius..dirt and water, 25 gold/plat rings and 3 big gold chains...I know nothing of the technical aspects of diff machines being "better" for chains over others...I have a F70 and the AtPro...both good mid range machines. 14hz or so freq....and like I said, I HUNT for chains, I dont give a tinkers cuss about old silver coins, so my set up parameters and hunting style differ from those that do...I cant stress enough the FOCUS required to hunt chains...theres a few posters on Findmall that really knock the stink out of gold chains and bracelets above average that I follow and learn from...

Anybody with decent skills will not miss a ring..agreed? Gold chains are a different matter...I bet theres a monster chain within 10 miles of your house that has seen a few coils, maybe two.....just nobody took the time to evaluate that signal..I dont hunt the chain as much as I hunt the wearer...you go and key on who wears big gold chains and hunt THEM and their patterns..you know what I'm saying?.

You watch people, get an idea of the kind of person in your area that wears a gold chain, their travel patterns, habits and hobbies and hunt THEM on the hopes they lose one...very small odds..lots of people wear gold rings..very few wear gold chains and actually lose them, so it narrows down your hunting pattern and thought process immensely....you know what I'm saying?

You want a fun excersize? keep an eye out for anybody who wears a gold chain as you are going about your daily life...who cares about the tiny ones women wear? You are hunting big mans gold, so proceed accordingly ..

I found a couple over the years with Tesoro Lobo ST and 8 inch round coil in swimming ponds. A long silver chain came up wrapped around my scoop basket/handle one time, it was a chirpy sound I would not normally have dug. Found a 10 K wrist bracelet in another pond but it was a solid beep. have yet to find any gold neck chains altho I am told to detect in fields used by Hispanic adult soccer players as they wear tons of gold chains. I need to know what to listen for too???

Yeah Tom, they have an awful sound...can be in foil or high iron,...really an awful sound, so it comes down to focusing on those signals in a likely chain losing place like the soccerfield you mentioned, around a basketball court, along the edge of parking lots where the snow gets pushed outside those wedding reception rental halls...especially out back where the smokers go and a fight would break out...even in some totlots...where the guys go at night...in a park near the bb court if you can find one...a totlot with a bb court that has night games going on is a hotspot.
O course swimming areas...but not all of them are good for chains...if you have a place where a lot of drinking goes on, and a big shallow flat with maybe a foot of water in it..thats where the guys play football in the water and show off...

The gold chain signals are not strong and dont hold when you lift the coil very far, if that helps...and the detector has a hard time figuring out the links and jumping around in a scattered signal you know?

Men that wear big gold chains have about one thing on their mind...its not tough to find the spot where that one thing happened outdoors, but is is tough to find that chain...condom wrappers in the private areas of any place are about the best signal you can get to have a chance for a chain...you will find the medallions, and if the bale isnt broke, the chain is nearby, but if its a small one, it may not register on your machine unless you hit the clasp..tiny little peep if anything...good thing is they are out there, and with such a bad signal, missed by coils...

I have found some small gold chains. All with my Compadre. It doesnt seem to have as much trouble as my other machines. My GB pro is more sensitive to them in testing but has never led me to one. In fact all but one piece of gold that I have found (except nuggets) has been with the Compadre. I use it especially where there are lots of rusted steel bottle caps about. It is much better at weeding through them than my other machines.

Best gold chain detector I've used is the AT Pro. And trust me when I say I've tried a lot of them.

Some of the chains.

Settings used on your AT when finding chains? I just had mine upgraded and wasn't very happy with Garrett for hitting me for over $200
on this simple 40 dollar upgrade kit. They claimed my coil was bad, control box, plugs, connectors, etc, etc.Why did I have to pay for their goofs?
So,I now have the camlocks a,new coil, new housing, etc but the machine still chatters when I turn it on in either std or Pro mode,at home.
Is this an interference issue? My Ace 250 is ok in my condo.
Thanks. Ps, can the AT find gold nuggets too?

-Tom

I run pro mode zero, 40 disc, iron audio off..though I can see running a lower disc, 30-35 maybe....Interested in hearing Southwinds settings, thats a stinky pile of chains!

We have no beaches in southwest Kansas so all these were found in the dirt or tot lots.

Most of the time I'll run in PRO CUSTOM with 21 discrimination iron audio off. In tot lots I run STD ZERO 21 discrimination and iron audio on. I like to hear everything in a tot lot. A lot of these chains will grunt like a piece of iron but have a slight mid tone mixed in. Probably the clasp.

I just accidentally found this same exact gold chain photo on a beach hunting forum from 2011 from a Whites DFX user?
Now I am confused? DFX or AT Pro finds?

-T

The AT Pro blows the DFX away, in my opinion, on gold chains. All these chains were tested on the AT Pro not found by the AT Pro. The picture is meant to represent the chains the AT Pro does very well on. The DFX was my go-to gold machine until I got the AT Pro. And again, we have no beaches in Kansas LOL

Maybe I should have labeled it some of the chains I've found over the years? I've got many more this is just an example for size comparison.

Now,if I could just get my AT to stop its chattering? Might have to go to the local park..maybe its interference again?

I drop At sens down 3 clicks from top to keep it stable here where I hunt, and it still pounds hard on gold...

Thats a mudpuppy, snot otter, waterdog, entirely aquatic, have gills outside their heads...they are common up here in the rivers of West Mich, still, a guy has to look for them in the right spots like anything..

Do they make a good pet or more like a salamander with poison skin you wanna steer clear of? I am just west of Chicago, never seen anything like that down here. Just salamanders in my brothers sump pump well.

We used to use waterdawgs for bait in a few larger lakes when I lived in SoCal.

Salton Sea especially, if you could find ones that could handle the saltwater

Hoser John,
This subject has been discussed on several forums in the past.
I have to differ with you, the electronic field of a detector's coil cannot detect individual links in a chain,, touching or not, they are too close to detect them individually.
Actually, it would be impossible for the links not to touch.

Ken/CO

Most of my detectors will detect a single link of a gold chain. My Gold Bugs will detect a flake of gold smaller than a troy grain. The clasp would be the equivalent of a nice little nugget. The fact that the links are touching doesn't mean they are providing enough connectivity for the detector to ''see it'' as a solid conductor. Not jmo.!
