Find a school or totlot or hunt the pasture?

Just bought two detectors, and getting started. We are visiting family in AL, for the week, and I'm wondering where we should try hunting? There's an old house (at least 60-70 years old) that I plan on hunting. Also today I found out that there is an older foundation in the south pasture, so I plan on hunting that as well. My question is should we just take a stroll out across the pastures and hope to hit something, or head up to town and hit some of the school play grounds and parks? There are almost 700 acres here with several streams and ponds, and some woods, but mostly cleared pasture. Some of it was disced up this year for planting peanuts. Haven't tried to find out if there are any Civil War camps or battle grounds in the area. We are near Geneva/Samson, Al if any one knows of anything interesting?

God Bless,

I would try the Old House..and the foundation for sure. Hunt the schools and parks if you have time left.......

When you hunt the pasture, starting around the foundation and working your way outwards is a good place to start. Good luck, sounds like you may be onto something. HH jim tn

Always try to hunt the foundation and any close landmarks that you think may have been there around the time the house was occupied. It's been known that people would cache money and valuables around what they believed to be long lasting landmarks such as the big oak tree, or ten steps beyond the biffy, or even at the so and so corner of the foundation. And if you can locate the out house, it's worth going over. Mother nature has long since purified the area.

Thanks guys, I got in a little time at the old house and found an old brass grommet, a beaver tail, a modern pull tab, and a zincoln. Then it was time to head to the pasture while they were spreading 8000# of seed for winter grazing. I got to dig a lot of aluminum foil there, some old rusty nails, and some small peices of copper. Mostly just trying to learn the sounds the detector is making, thumbing the discrimination knob, and trying to figure out what it is and how deep before I start digging. One piece of aluminum foil I was sure I had found something good. However, it wadded up tight instead of laying flat. I was glad I knew it was a different tone though. So I guess I learned something today.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get to work the old house, and the old foundation some more.

You might just want to practice up in the totlots, just to get the feel of your equipment, and also to see if theres anyone in that area sweeping them...you should know by the lack of, or abundance of money there. By all means a great old homestead or pasture is what we are all looking for, but I sure would not want to give that a go on my first run...there will be lots of iron, and all sorts of signals to chase, but it may be frustrating and unproductive for you too...hit the totters early am, and head on out to the pasture once the dew gets off the grass...should be a nice day! Let us know how it turns out, and I wish you find a hoard of Yankee gold!

This Saturday I'm visiting a buried burned down village (Ottoman Turks did it about 300 years ago), and I'm asking where should I start, above the center of the "hill", or around the lower parts and the more external areas?
I don't think I'll find anything around what's left of walls. My target would be hitting the lowland areas.
Any comments?

Still staying close to the farm trying to help out here. Shoveled about 6000# of rye and oats to the auger in the silo this AM. Was able to get about 5 hours in on the old house detecting. Found lots of trash, several brass rivets, something that looks like part of a nail file that really set the detector off, discarded 22 shells, 1 22magnum unfired, a zipper, etc, etc,. Seems like you think you've found everything possible and then something else gets dug up that is different.

Did find two nickels, 20 zincolns, and I think 5 copper pennies. Nothing older than the 70's. When did they start making the zincoln's? Seems like I read somewhere it was 86?

God Bless,
