Finaly Got Out Today...........

Congrats! Glad to see you're getting out and finding some relics. Nice finds. :clapping: HH Randy

Them are some very nice relic's you found there, Congrats.

P.S, can you send some of that warm air up this way. It sure would be nice to get back out MD'ing.

Got a few keepers. The 705 and the 18.75 10" DD are winners...

Great, good finds, so you do not have totally frozen ground there! If you are not already using some, make sure you wear a good pair of soft padded knee pads, so that the straps are comfortable, do not annoy you, and do not dig into the back of your legs. I know as I was a carpenter for over 20 seasons and wore them alot.

Check out my most recient post. CW Camp, carpet of nails, no problem for the 18.75..........MO

Thanks! I am getting this round 10.5" HF DD coil in the mail in the next couple of days along with the 5x10" and 2 lower rods. I have not used one yet. I will give it a work out when the ground thaws or in an air test. Randy said to put coils with their rods in a tennis racket case(probably preferrably padded), for transportation or storage.

It IS good to know the 10.5" HF DD can be used for Relic hunting successfully because most people seem to use the 10.5" MF DD instead.

I said, "...the 10.5" HF DD is not designed to be a yard hunting coil in iron trash. It does not work as well in iron(too well in fact) simply because it is a HF coil would also have some fits in heavy iron trash." "Yes it can be used for but it is NOT especially designed for clad, silver, and copper coin yard hunting....it is so sensitive to iron(low conductive), also very small junk targets, going deeper for these. BUT the benefit of this coil is it deeper and more sensitive to very small gold(and iron Relics)."

Actually it works too good in iron, and I have said before that the HF would be better than the MF for Relic hunting because it will pick up iron Relics better and deeper. But it was concluded that the HF will pick up tiny small micro sized iron pieces that are junk and the MF would ignore these better for Relic hunting. BUT now that you say:=> "Got a few keepers. The 705 and the 18.75 10" DD are winners." and "CW Camp, carpet of nails, no problem for the 18.75." That does change my mind somewhat and I am looking forward to using my 10.5" HF DD and I am glad I bought it instead of the MF!

This is what Randy(Digger) wrote recently on January 14, 2010 and he has some very good advice here:=> "As to the round 10.5 DD coils...... since the depth of detection is somewhat dependent on the width of the coil, the "wider" 10.5 round coils will be deeper than an elliptical coil of the same "length". From my observations, the large round DD coils have +/- 40% more depth than the elliptical. I've found the 10.5 DD at 18.75 kHz to be more sensitive than the 10.5 DD at 7.5 kHz. As such, I usually have to lower the sensitivity setting to operate it without falsing. But with all those things considered, both are similar in performance, depth wise."

"There is so much to consider when chosing the proper coil for a particular application. I believe lower frequencies are better suited for higher conductive targets and higher frequencies are better suited for lower conductive targets. I believe that lower frequency coils will detect larger objects at greater depths and higher frequencies are more "sensitive" to smaller targets. I believe that DD coils neutralize the effects of highly mineralized ground much better than concentric coils, making the DD coils a far better choice in those applications. And I believe that larger coils hunt deeper than smaller coils, simply due to the size and shape of the electromagnetic lines of flux being tranmitted into the ground. So when chosing a coil, one must consider the size of targets they are seeking, the mineralization of the ground they are hunting and the amount of "trash" they are likely to encounter. Remember that any of the coils are capable of finding anything metal. It is simply a matter of chosing the best tool for the job. And there are more factors than simply the conductivity of target you are searching for."

I have one question for you, what is your setting on the X-70(5) for CW Camp and/or all Relic hunting?? (For example, a C & T Mode Disc. Pattern, All-Metal, or Prospecting Mode with Iron Mask set at max 20, etc.)

If you look at the Tejon @ 17kHz and the Troy X5 @ 19 kHz, they are extremely hot on lead and brass, with that said, the 18.75 kHz Xterra coils, all of them would work great relic hunting. I use C&T mode, ALL METAL, 2 tones and run in auto trac. I ran my sens yesterday at 28 with no problems, still, you will ge high tone signals on horseshoes and I did on the sturip that I found. The little cuff button was at 6 " and most of the lead was in the 8-10" range, however, the soil is hot here in places, thats why I use autotrac and auto noise cancel. Prospecting mode is something I rarely use, if at all...............MO

Good information, and I need it.

Went out today myself and went to St. Louis and hunted some small park areas that divide a closed off street. they are about 30 feet wide and full of money. Gave up today after finding six clad quarters, but did find a merc. I am happy with the performance of the 705 for coin hunting. Penny's were everywhere and gave up digging them, it was cold, ground was cold and muddy, knees were wet, it just wasn't worth digging clad pennies. Sticking to the high tones gave me the quarters and merc.

Then headed West to Rolla and hit my fields. I am using the DD mid range coil and did not do well. I don't think that coil is going to give me the sensitivity that I need for the small lead. I may need to do as you stated and jump up to the higher frequency coil. I finally broke out my Tejon and found some small lead.

this machine is going to take some getting used to, but at least now I can find coins.

Hi ,
Real nice old relics morelic 55...great work.

jhettel, I find the 5x 10" HF DD elliptical covers ground reasonably well, is very sensitive and gives good depth.
..... and the 6" HF DD is super sensitive but obviously is less suited to covering big areas...probably more for sniping amongst heavy trash/target concentration.
