After four months of reading, 3 months of practicing and a month-and-a-half of hunting, I finally put my coil over my first silver with the E-Trac today. I was hunting an old church that was converted into a community activity center last year. I'd been on the site once last month, but there is a good bit of trash in it and I had more difficulty than I could handle for my level of experience, so I backed off. I was going to another place today, but as I drove by the old church I decided I'd try it again. You don't learn without struggling, right? I started right in by the front door where people would congregate and talk after church. I lost my threshold in about 3 feet and didn't pick it up again for about 20 more. Even without the threshold I picked up some good signals and dug a few clads. I worked a back and forth grid and after I'd gotten about 10 feet away from the building, the trash started getting less and I could tell more about what was going on. I hit a strong signal that came in at 12-13. That's usually my nickel numbers so I knew I'd dig it, but I went around the target in a circle anyway to see if the signal would change. About three quarters of the way into the circle the numbers dropped to 12-12 and then to 9-13. I was really curious then, so I dug the plug and about 6 inches down I see a ring barely peeking out of the wall. I'm thinking...GOLD with the numbers I'd gotten, but it was a junker. Still got me excited though. I was running out of time as this is a fairly large lot, so I decided to hit the edge around the sidewalk (it's two sided like an "L") then cut back across the lot to my truck. I was digging clad all the way around and back. Then I dug a spill that had 2 quarters, a dime and three pennies. Got those in my pouch and I had about 3 feet to go until I reached the spot where I'd gridded before. I hit a 12-45, but it rang out like none I'd hit before. A dime, I thought. 7 inches down on the scale though, so it had some depth. I pushed in my Lesche blade to the hilt and cut my plug. I flipped it over and didn't see anything. I ran my X-1 in the hole and it was still in there. I loosened up a little more dirt and grabbed a handful to dump on my towel. In the bottom of the hole lay a shiny dime. Since I'd not found any silver on this site, I was thinking, "man, that dime's brand new!" But it wasn't. It's not super old either, but it is my first silver with the E-Trac so I brought him home with me. I still need to work the rest of that site and I think there might be a few more silvers in there. We'll see. It'll have to wait for several weeks though since I'm leaving on Sunday for my trip to Georgia. At last, I'm on the board!!
