Finally the silver!

Well, it's taken a few trips but I finally found a little silver in the ground.

It's a nice little 1914 barber head dime. Found it with the 5.3 coil, picking it out of a very trashy little spot at a very old
swimming site, that I learned about with this winters research.

So keep swinging guys, it's a great hobbie. :)

It's always great to find silver. I'm sure there will be more. Was it deep? Rob

No it was not deep about 3 inches, but under an undercut riverbank. I had decided to use some of my old gold mining experience and took a guess
that coins might fall out of what was the old beach area that had eroded away. So I assume that it had been eroded out of that area, into the sand and gravel.

It did make me check the area above where I found the coin pretty extensively, and I found an old rusty can. But I'll be sure to go back and give the D2 coil a try
just in case the 5.3 traded depth on me for that area.

For grins I took the barber dime and buried it in the same soil I had just found it in to see exactly how deep I could detect it with the 5.3 and it seems that about 8.5 - 9 inches with the settings I had running at the time. The VDI numbers did not seem to be accurate at all at those depths, which I think is consistent with what others have been saying about VDI's on deep coins. Pin pointing worked but it was quite different from what I've been used to with shallower coins, so I'm going to have to make a coin garden and experiment more.

And a dandy first too, congratulations on your Barber.
