Finally settled on the CZ3D.

Took it for a spin this last weekend. Got a Mass copper. The area I hunted we have been going back to for the past 3 years. Always seems to produce something, if not today then tomorrow.
Having a little trouble understanding why so many nails sound so good. Crown caps are just as bad when you hit an old party spot.
Is it best to hunt wide open or with discrimination?
Does the tone change to your ear in time?
I know with my X5 I can tell a good target from a bad one from the softness of the tone. With the Explorers its all metal for me and I hunt by tone with the icon as a reference.
I'm sure with time I will learn to love the CZ3D. But for now I need a few pointers. Oh, also have ordered the 10.5" coil for the more open areas. The 8" seems so tiny in the field.

Hey Bob,

If you haven't already, try to get a copy of Nasa Tom's DVD. This is a really informative video regardless of what detector you are using, but he is using the 3D in the video. I sold my 3D, but would have definately kept it if I had watched the video first.

Good luck with the 3D!

At least I hope soon, mine is being repaired at the moment so will be learning it as well Bob. For the little time I used it, I found myself switching back to salt mode to recheck targets..seemed to help me on the shallow ones. They say that discrimination doesn't affect the depth much on these, but ran mine at "0" anyway. Have you seen or viewed any of the tip pages from Mike or Tom yet? If not, I am sure we can send you a link for those. Very helpful indeed. Wish you luck Bob, let us know how you are doing.

Been reading a lot and learning from reading. The only way to put it all together is to get out and hunt.

Using many detectors over the years(Explorer) included I feel a CZ coil for coil may be the deepest around.
Crown caps just cover a larger area takes time to distinguish..
Heres the drill for rusty nails....and I dig very few unless going for a real deepie or iffie.
Signal must repeat from at least two angles, remember coil swinging left to right not to and fro, so you need to move around target, to and fro doesn't cut it with a CZ for some reason..If the target seems larger than a coin or double beeps from one angle, let it go. While digging if the pinpoint seems to move let it lie..To me a nail actually sounds different but again time in the field...Sure we all get fooled but the above can help.
A CZ is one of the few units that doesn't loose depth with high discrimination so your call high or low discrimination with no loss of depth and arguments either way especially if looking for silver coins.
Yep with time you will learn the language of a CZ and to me in coins all(dime, copper and above) silver coins just seem to be more mellow.
10.5 coil gives a little more depth, pinpoints well seems to cover twice the area, but its heavy.
Hope I have covered it all, but you can always E-mail me direct and pick my brain as I have used CZ's one model or the other since 92.
Last but not least visit Mikes CZ page which should be called the Bible for CZ users as Mike also used CZ's since 92 and has collected a lot of useful info and of course Nasa Tom sure has some good material out on CZ's and just general detecting..
