Last week I get a call from my dad to tell me that the old amusement park lot has been graded and there are moving a lot of dirt around. I went over there right after dinner and took the wife and my 3 boys with me figuring they would love to play in some dirt. My father used to visit the park which operated form 1948 until about 1962. Hoping to find some silver, I took the EX II with my new favorite coil (8 x 6 SEF).
When we got there a guy from the car repair building located at the front of the property came out to chat and mentioned that there used to be an old house (mid 1800's) where there shop sits now as well as a toll booth for crossing the bridge over the old creek. Now I'm thinking maybe I could get some older stuff. The kids took off with the ACE 250 and mom to help them out. I went into the field and the first target was a small brass buckle followed by the brass wick parts of an old lantern. Nothing was that deep since they had scraped it so I didn't have to turn the sensitivity up too much. After chatting some more with the owner of the car place, I then headed out to find some silver. Within just a couple of minutes I got the nice sound of silver and out pops a '41 Quarter. I yelled over to the wife to tell her and she gave me the thumbs up. Now I start working the area around where the quarter came out and no less than a foot away I get a screaming silver sound and I drop down to dig. Digging in this are wasn't as easy because they spread some of the harder clay over the topsoil they had scraped. I had to dig through 2-3 inches of clay to get back to the remaining topsoil. Man was I surprised when I opened the hole and saw lady liberty! I yelled to the wife and her and the kids came running over. Finally, after 12 years of detecting the elusive silver half was in my hands! The best part was my family got to witness and experience me doing my happy dance. (I need to get the picture off of her phone to post).
After the excitement died down I was able to pull 2 more dimes from the area. After the kids wore out from swinging the Ace 250 (there only 9, 6, and 4), it was mommy's turn. She calls me over saying she is having trouble pinpointing what she thinks is a good target. The SEF was spot on and sniffed out a large rusty nail and a silver rosie int he same shallow hole. She calls me over again and sure enough, nail and a token in the same hole. Total for the 2 hour hunt were 1 silver half, silver quarter, 3 silver dimes and the token.
Saturday morning I dropped the boys off at their grandparents (wife went out of town) about 8:30. Hit the spot at 9:00 and brought some friends. Bill (you can read "brill from cincy" on the E-Trac forum) and Ken did very well and managed I think 10 silvers between them, including a sweet 1917 D walking liberty half found by Bill. Silver was eluding me although wheaties and tokens were not. In one 2 foot area I pulled 15 wheaties (1910-1952). In another 8 foot area I pulled 8 brass tokens and a few aluminum bar tokens. By the time we were done for the day I had 14 tokens and finally managed to pull out a merc just before we left at 3:00. Total of 32 wheaties, 1 merc, 14 tokens, and some misc.
Sunday morning comes and talk the boys into going for one more short hunt. We had a little over an hour because "mommy" would be coming home today and we had to get back home. My 9 and 4 year decided after 45 minutes of playing around they wanted to sit in the car and listen to the radio. My 6 year old was bound and determined to find a coin before we left. (I really think he's going to love this hobby). With about 10 minutes to go before we called it a day, I told Carter that I would find him a coin signal and then he could use the Ace 250 to find it and then he could dig it. I get a real shallow hit that pinpoints to the bottom part of one of the dozer tracks. Thinking it's a wheat because it was higher, my jaw dropped and his eyes lit up when he found it and I saw how green it was. He had found an Indian! 1865 to be exact. He had to use my cell phone to call his mother as he couldn't wait for her to get home to tell her. Needless to say, I think he's hooked. I didn't get a picture of the Indian, it's soaking in olive oil. I think it's been some of the best time I've ever had detecting. Thanks for looking and sorry for the long post. HH
