finally made it out with my ace 250

today the weather finally co-operated with me and allowed me to get out for the first real hunt. I hit a local park and dug all decent signals, found plenty of junk and some clad. A copper piece, have no idea what it is, has some threads inside, a copper wire, a what would Jesus do charm (aluminum)

I had a LOT of trouble learning the pinpoint. My holes were huge.......

I got a lot of signals that said they were dimes but turned out being aluminum can scraps??? is that normal?

I have a ton of learning to do. Hope it gets better. Best find today was a 1965 quarter. Only one year away from silver, sucks huh? here is my loot for the day, my son had a blast.

I found a 2000 penny over 6" deep, makes u wonder

Let me say you had a nice hunt. I judge that on your nickel count per total of coins. Good job! I can only see one target you might have left in the ground and that's the large aluminum lid. When you get a good hit in the high coin range lift your coil off the ground about 12 inches. If you still get a beep then it's usually a large object like a can or large aluminum. The smaller aluminum beeps a little harder than a nickel - but not always. So you did good to dig them. Have you read all the posts on pinpointing? Especially about how to detune a target?

Looks like you did good for your first time out. Dig it all until you get a feel for the signals. You will get plenty of locks on dime and quarter that turn out to be junk. That's part of the game.

You need to turn your sensitivity down to four bars and leave it there. Practice your pinpointing. Digging big holes gets us all banned from parks etc. Use a probe to locate your target before digging. Tape some coins to the back of a piece of cardboard and practice pinpointing. Use something sharp to poke thru the cardboard to see if you have pinpointed the target. Good luck.

Pinpointing takes practice and you'll eventually get it. Thats why bark chip areas are good starting places. Easy to put it back like you found it. The how to pinpoint post with the 250 appears all over this forum. The day after I found it I was an expert. Bring a variety of targets with you to the bark chip area and bury them. Learn where they indicate on the scale. Practice pinpointing them.

You had a good day. 15 coins would have satisfied me on day 1. It is also good that you found some nickels. Dig enough nickels and one will be a gold ring some day soon. Also a cool dog tag plus a nice day with your boy.

I don't know why those zinc cents are such strong signals but I have found them very very deep. Deeper than even silver coins.

Turn the sensitivity dow a few bars to start. Practice pinpointing (have I said that before?) Respect the land your hunting on and leave it as you found it. I guarantee in a week or so something will click and the loot will really pile up. You'll learn to recover faster and more efficiently. You'll be able to look at an area and sense where the loot is.

I have read several posts here on pinpointing, and some targets were exactly where I thought it should be and others were off by several inches. I am not sure about detuning, explain please!

I had sensitivity on 4 bars all day.

Detuning shrinks the target response in the pinpoint mode. Pinpoint as usual. Then move the coil about 2 inches to the side of the target. Now release and repush the PP button real quick. Then slide the coil back over your target. You have now detuned the target. You'll see that the pp tone response is smaller in size and lower in tone. Don't let that pp button up yet. Now find the center of the target left to right. Don't let that button up. Then slowly pull the coil strait towards you just until the tone goes dead. Now the target will be right under the inner coil at the 12 o'clock position.
Note: Sometimes you have to repush the button a few times real quick when you first detune. Sometimes it's the first time - sometimes it's the 3rd time. But what you are looking for is a smaller target response in the pp mode. It's hard enough to show someone how to detune let alone say it in words. Once you get it YOU GET IT!!!!

Tip- You will learn the size of good targets by pinpointing. Coins and rings have a smaller tight pinpoint response. Large aluminum and iron will pinpoint a lot larger area.

another question, it seems like a LOT of targets, (way over half) said they were 6 inches deep, I had to skip most because the ground was only thawed out 2-4 inches down.

several times it locked on and said it was a dime in the mulch, I dug and dug, found nothing, put the detector over the hole and it said it was still there, strong signal, but never found anything???

i've gotta say that khouse is bang on the money with that advice on pin pointing , just give it a go in your garden and practice what khouse says......it'll soon make sense :)

BTW, when your looking for your target, don't forget to
have a small towel next to the hole your digging to pikle your dirt on.
Run your coil over the dirt to see if the target is there first, before
you dig any further. Lots of times I have had it happen that the
target was right there after the first two scoops of dirt.

ALso I find that even if the hole IS a little big, as long as I have
dug a decent plug/flap, it covers over the hole again real nice, and
after stepping on it with the weight of my foot, it taps down real nice.
Can't even tell anyone dug there.

Regards
Robert
Looks like you had a good day.
Say, whos the blond in the photo?
RR:)-)
that is my baby......Major

and My dug holes looked ok because I always cut a plug and replaced it when I was done, that wasn't the problem.
I think I got it figured out, now just need the weather to get nice again!
