Finally got Tony's Elite headed back his way.

Tony was frustrated with his Elite so I volunteered to take a look at his Sovereign Elite.Reality hit me as I open the shipping box might be a lot of work?Just remembered a ML meter I was going to repair, ever thing went wrong circuit board was exposed to salt water and sometimes if the board was pressed or bent it would work for a minute or two ,the guy was disappointed when I told him his meter was dead on arrival. Anyway put one of my Elite battery packs in and turned it on little croak and it was a steady threshold.Connected my 800 coil to Tony's Elite and seem to work perfect with the dime and nickle used.Right before the Elite was shipped took the box apart and looked at the board everything in place, took a Que tip and cleaned some grit away from the coil connector inside and around the crevices of the box lid before putting back together. Finally hooked Tony's Box on my rod asm and ran through my coin garden.Anyway this Sovereign Elite worked fine. Thanks Ron

Ron, so you couldn't find any problems with it? Did you tweak on the board a bit with it open with pressure in spots to see if a cold solder joint would show or wiggle on the wires/ribbon to see if a short would show there? If you did that and still no problems then has to be his battery holder has a problem with it since you used your own. Either the main battery tabs are having issues or it's the leads inside the holder to the cells.

Glad to see you could help him out and hope the problem is the battery holder and not something in the box. Sounds like it's the battery holder though.

You know, got a similar story. Right after I had my GT apart and did my mods for the remote PP switch and put it back together to try, a friend comes over as we were headed off for a hunt. So I turn the machine on to try the remote PP and show it off to him and swept over a coin on the floor in discriminate, then flip with my finger and go into PP mode for the first time and it worked for a few seconds in PP and suddenly the machine died!

He said "what happened?", and even went to smell the control box to see if he could smell anything burning. I took a deep breath and thought "no way it could have shorted out", because the way my circuit was even if it grounded out in various ways it should only just switch to one of the modes and be stuck there and not fry anything. I picked up my little pictorial schematic I drew and skimmed over it for a sec to confirm no way I could have fried this machine.

Anyway, pulled the battery holder out, opened it, re-adjusted the 8AAs (this was right before I switched to a 3 cell lipo), threw the battery holder back in, turned it on, and sure enough the machine was fine. Never had that ever happen before or since, so imagine the poor timing of that. Had me really worried I overlooked something. I knew I didn't, but with that major coincidence of the first time I threw the switch a few seconds later the machine going dead it really shook me for a second and I thought I pulled some kind of bonehead obvious oversight when I wired it up.

Moral of the story is usually the problem with any detector is going to be the battery leads not making good contact, second probability is battery it's self being bad maybe, third is going to be a wire short or a cold solder joint somewhere that comes and goes. Components on a circuit board rarely fail.

Critter forgot to mention his battery pack was later used with no problems.LOL yea I moved things around and rechecked don't want to fix something that's not broken. Most know on this forum when you get to be a die hard Sovereign or Excal user you do your own repairs. Thanks Ron

So what then do you think was causing his issue of the low battery squeel and then it suddenly dying then?

Ron that happened only once with my GT when it was 2 years old that loud squeal and then shut down i took it home and cleaned the battery term,s and tab,s with a pencil eraser drained the battery and gave it a full recharge it,s worked fine since , i have to ask where did you get all those boards from ? lol Jim

Critter, the Elite, was ran a few times different battery packs, and then rechecked.Tony will connect his coil and see if everything is fine. Thanks Ron

Jim,I agree what ever the problem it wasn't there,LOL maybe the Post Office fixed the problem with their shipping methods.Yea,I have a few boards.Just got beatup on Ebay sold an Explorer overseas and the Gentleman wanted a refund even though the Customs form was ran 2 wks ago at the post office and showed the package was delivered.Ebay decided in my favor on this case, next day the guy opened up a nother case right after his lost case saying the Explorer was just recieved and was broken they decided in his favor. My cost minus the destroyed Explorer 344.00 plus payment to my new friend 344.00 my net loss 688.00.I had been lucky with a lot of overseas sales but when you get hit it hurts.I just sold off some of my equipment to pay for my lost,I did sell one of the boards. Thanks Ron

It's either going to somehow be his coil then or when you unplugged all the wires and such and re-hooked everything up it fixed a intermittent short is my guess in a dirty or loose connection maybe. Don't see how the coil could cause the problem, unless somehow it's grounding out and causing the voltage to sag badly real quick, thus the low battery squeel and then it shutting off due to the voltage sagging below the low voltage cut off point for the regulator with some kind of ground short.

Either way, good job and hope the issue is gone for him. You've once again done the Sovereign community a great service, just like your excellent meter is.

Ron, sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Explorer sale. Had a similar one myself. Bought an Explorer and re-sold it a few days later (#3 because I came into another machine I wanted to devote time to). Guy gets the machine and says he thought I said it was new, because it had some dirt under the coil cover I hadn't bothered to clean. I said no, never said it was new in the ad. Said it have very little hours on it. Showed him the receipt to prove it was bought recently, and then he turns around and says the receipt was doctored! Realized then this guy was trying to scr*w me, as he had cancelled the check.

I said send it back and he refused, and started telling me he wanted me to knock off a chunk of money from the price. Told him no, I'm already taking a huge hit on a recently bought new machine, and that he should just send it back and we'd go our separate ways. He still refused, so I called his local sheriff department and explained he cancelled the check and yet refused to send it back. They told me they'd deliver him a notice that he's going to be charged with mail order check fraud. Once I emailed him that document on that that I filled out he suddenly decided he'd send it back to me. I said look, you can either spend the money to ship it back or I'll knock off $25 from the price just so we can be done with this, but I want a money order mailed to me. He agreed and the deal was done.

I'll never sell to anybody who doesn't have a proven track record I can look up in posts and such. Later when I researched him after the fact I found he was in the business (not in an established business but was buying/selling on the side) of buying machines and re-selling them, so obviously he was in it for every dime he could squeeze out of me to make a profit and not buying it to use. I wouldn't doubt he pulled the same stunt with other people and that's how he was making himself a hefty profit, by buying machines and then refusing to pay until they dropped the price after the deal was done. I had told him I wanted a money order and yet he sent me a check, so obviously he was up to something right there.

Don't anybody bother asking me his name, as it was long ago on another website and one of several guys I sold my Explorers to. In fact, two of my Explorers me and several guys kept buying and selling back to each other over time, so I've actually owned more then 3 over the years if you look at it that way. So I'm not calling anybody out here or looking to smear somebody. Truth is I don't even remember his name now anyway. Tried hard to forget it.

I gotta throw in another big THANKS TO YOU RON, I'm very grateful for your help and on a Holiday weekend no less! I'm gonna take your advice and let you know what happens. I'm ready to listen to the Elite and learn what it has to say!!!!

Ron,

Great to hear the Elite works good now as I felt it didn't have to go in to Minelab and with someone experienced with the Sovereign would be able to repair it.

I don't like selling to anyone overseas too for the reason you are having. I will sell to those I know from the forums here and been on here for a while that live out of the country. Just finished up one that I felt too many red flags for me to send it out of the USA and he had a relative in IL I am sending it too with insurance and delivery conformation and tracking number, then he can send it to this person in Poland. It was a used a couple weeks CTX 3030 I had on E-Bay and he was the only bidder of $1795 and when he won wanted me to send it to Poland, but wanted it valued as $130-$140 so he pays less customs on his end, but I know if anything happened to it we couldn't collect what it was worth. He had a 45 positive feed back which was 100%, but looked up the items to see they were mostly from China for small items.. Now if his relative wants to send it to Poland he can and I should be done as soon as it gets to the relative of his.
It is getting bad with people out of the USA doing scams as I know everyday I get at least one E-Mail wanting me to send detectors out of the USA and accepting credits cards, most you can see is sent to many different people. I remember when a person word was good enough and sent many detectors and accessories out before getting paid as most were honest people we have on our Forum here and had very good luck as they always paid me.

Thanks Ron for doing a great service for our People with the Sovereigns and doing a great job moderating this forum, just wish we had more people posting some of the great finds they are finding and some good tips they learned by Experience you get from actual use of the Sovereigns.

Rick next week I hope to be back in the field.I called Ebay and yelled at them ,how could they side on a case with a predicted second strategy by this guy??My point to Ebay they encourage overseas buyers to rip off US sellers.I couldn't understand why this guy would have a case in the first place with all the documents,Yea they made a decision on my behalf on the first case that should not have been an issue in the first place.I don't like any kind of bureaucrats making any kind of decisions for me not even at Ebay.Ebay has become a CYA organization and not backing their sellers who make them a ton of money. Most intelligent people don't like others making decisions for them.Sorry for the chatter. Thanks for the confidence.Ron

I'm glad to hear that Ron was able to fix Tony's machine up. I first talked to Tony a few days after he got his Elite and was about to give up on it. He did a few things with me over the phone and I guessed at it being the battery pack (my ML rechargeable works GREAT but the AA pack is, well, problematic) or a bad HP jack in need of cleaning since he would get sound after "jacking in and out a couple times and it sounded like good tone over the phone. I am doubly happy as I encouraged Tony to try finding someone to help him on this site. I knew someone could come to his rescue, GOOD JOB RON!!!

As for selling on FEEbay or any of those other sites, I just plain don't do it anymore. If you want to buy something from me, we'll do it in person or not at all.... I also don't do local Craigslist to sell anything either. Just too many scammers out there nowadays.

Craigslist is fine so long as you meet the person in a neutral location such as a public parking lot with many people around. I actually prefer it for that reason once in a great while when I sell something, because no worries with shipping or getting a payment in the mail either.
