FINALLY got to actually take the XL PRO out of my yard. Here's what I REALLY THINK after hunting with it.....

[attachment 59518 clad2.jpg]WOW and WOW again!! I went to a football field that's now used as a soccer field. It's only been there since the mid 70's so I knew there would only be clad there. I took my lady and son there a few weeks ago and we had a blast as she was trying out the classic ID with Mr. Bill mods that I bought for her. My son was using the Ace 250. That day we found 71 coins between us and it was a ball. I much prefer to hunt for deep silver...but with gas prices the way they are right now...this was the only site that fit our budget this weekend. I got to hunt for a full 5 hours and CLEANED HOUSE on clad! I could have easily popped WELL OVER 100 coins out of the ground...but I left 25 pennies or more in the ground for the rest of my crew to find at a later date.
When I hunted there a few weeks ago I did very well using my SE but my arm hurt after about 2 to 3 hours. This time was a blast and I was able to "whip" the XL PRO around like a fly swatter. It was hot and I was going way too fast and no where near overlapping my sweeps with the 5.3 coil. The XL PRO didn't care!! Heres the TAKE:
30 quarters...18 dimes....19 pennies (all read higher than dimes)...7 nickels....1 wheatie....75 coins in all...but would have been well over 100 if I wanted to pop out more pennies. I did real well on my dime to penny ratio for a while as I walked over at least 25 to 30 pennies so my lady and son could find them some other time. I got fooled by stinkin' Lincolns that read slightly higher than dimes though so I dug them. If the meter said dime...then it was a dime...EVERY time. However like I said I did dig 19 pennies that read just slightly higher than a dime. That same thing happens on my SE too though. There are a few years of stinkin' pennies that read just like a dime and they fool all my other machines too. What I liked about the XL PRO is that there were a TON of pennies that read just to the left of the penny on the meter and they were easiy to distinguish as pennies. I can't wait to take the xl pro to an old site...but man this was a fun time.

its a great machine. i use it with a mxt as back up. but ive been thinking if i fry my xl pro i have the mxt for back up but its not like ya can pick up the phone and call a dealer and get one in. i might be looking for another one. i think there gonna start getting scarce.

The Xl Pro is a great detector,:detecting: one of my favorite Whites machines of all time. I go back and fourth between it and my M6, I have all the coils for both units and they get the job done. Both are darn good detectors and both love coins.....:clapping: I personally like both these detectors better than the DFX, and the XLT as I have owned all these units over the years. Don;t get me wrong anyone, the DFX and XLT are great detectors and my opinion takes nothing away from them, just a personal choice.

I will never get rid of my XL Pro, to bad Whites quit producing them in 2005.

hi bill!
you got a terrific pair of coin hunting "monsters" there!..do you
find that one "hunts" better than the other under different hunting situations?

hey big john!
getting scarce?..they are almost impossible to find now!..NEW or USED!...good idea though, having one as a back up!.could cost ya though!..guys know how great a detector they really are!..good luck!

I think the M6 does better in more mineralized ground and the beach type applications as does the MXT. As a matter of fact I prefer the threshold based detectors like the XL Pro. So as much as I like the M6 with it being a silent search unit I have decided to upgrade back to the MXT, same detector with a few more functions and it is threshold based like I prefer over all in most situations. I know I will loose the tone ID function that the M6 has. I guess that will be one of the trade offs, but that is ok, I use the single tone most all the time with the M6 anyway.

I know the MXT circuitry is a little more noisy, but I can live with that. I had an MXT a few years back and made the mistake of selling it before I got my M6. I think that is why I liked the M6 so much and had no problems hunting with it or getting the feel for it quickly. Again I like the threshold sound when hunting, to bad the M6 does not have that option. I also feel the threshold based units get a little more depth in certain situations.

hi!..bill!
the m6 is a two pole design circuuit, and as such is supposed to recover more quickly from target to target than a 4 pole detector does!..the pro (4 poledesign) is supposed to get better depth, however
with the advances in digitized electronics,i would say that the m6 probably will equal the depth of the pro, coil for coil, and all other factors being equal..ie: soil conditions...with that said,i still feel that if a detectorist has JUST the pro to work with, then using the 5.3 coil on the pro,and setting the detector to (s.a.t.) mode, while working slowly in the trash,WILL,in my opinion enable the pro to properly isolate and identify targets on a par with the m6 in the same trashy environment.

I agree 100%, the XL Pro is hard to beat for a lot of the reasons you stated. After you spend some time with the XL Pro detector your understanding of what the unit can do starts to expand big time.:bouncy: The 5.3" coil like you say is great, I also love the 8" coil on the XL Pro and use it on my XL Pro most of the time.

As far as the Whites digital units go, again I prefer the MXT and M6 units over the DFX and XLT. I do find the sweep speed on the MXT, M6 units along with the quick signal response time and ease of use make these units my favorite Whites detectors since they stopped producing the analog XL Pro.

I have found that if you take the time to learn your detectors, they will treat you right...

both detectors are "crackerjack" at what they are designed to do!.find
coins!..again,i strongly believe whitey would still continue to produce the pro if the profit margin was acceptable, however, times
change, technology advances, and the industry is centered on the latest, and greatest.this is NOT a bad thing, but to be honest, the hard and fast fact in this hobby has always been the BEST detector is ALWAYS the one YOU become proficient with!..i know the pro well, and i will not hesitate to go head to head with ANY detector made!
