Finally got out...

There was a half inch crust of frozen dirt, but that went away within an hour or so. Man it felt good to swing the Explorer again. The first keeper I dug was a tiny petal bell (sleigh bell). I was hunting in a corn stubble field that had a house (on the 1873 maps), but no one around could remember there ever being a house there. Here are the coin goodies (shown front and back). The large cent was the first coin find. I think it is an 1821. Not a bad start for the new year! I dug two Indian head cents but gave one to the land owners. That is a Patriotic Token with a huge hole, darn. The farmer offered to buy the little sleigh bell, since they collect them. I gave it to him. They brought out quit a string of bells that were really impressive. The #1 that I found was smaller than any they had. It made everyone happy. Another farmer stopped when I was hunting, and I ended up getting permission for two more spots! It was an all around fun day.

Very nice finds on the coins - I especially like the patriotic token....why do you suppose it was notched like that?

I'm recharging my batteries now baby, the sun is shining and the ground is showing. Nice finds there Coin Biter especially with the Large cent find being your first coin of the year.

Very Nice!!!!! Great finds!!! Keep it up big fang!!!!!

I think they used a square nail to hole the coin which left only a tiny rim on the one side. Then it broke off (I figure)

Hey you sent me a PM and I replied but got a message that your mail storage space is full so you cannot receive any more PMs. You may want to delete some stuff. Her is my PM.

Hi Eric,
The maps I have are plat maps. They were put out by the county government (I think) and show every township in the county. You should be able to find them at your local library or historical society. I am lucky that a neighboring county local library and my county here both have copies printed up for sale of the old maps. I have three counties in my area on 1873 and 1860 maps. Even if your library does not have them for sale you can usually copy them off. My one set is copies. Don't get tired and not copy the entire book. You will want the index and all of the city maps in the back! They still make plat maps, which is great for us because they list the owners of each parcel of land. Once you get your old maps, if you want, buy a new set of the same county. Then it is just a matter of looking them up in the phone book for a number or address. I have better luck gaining permission face to face.
Good luck in you map and detecting searches!
