FINALLY got my first silver(s)........EVER!!

It finally happened. I got my first two silvers today.

As some of you know from responding to my E-trac issues, I was having my doubts about me and my machine. Up until today, I have never found silver and only a few wheats and the usual clad but nothing deeper than about 4 inches. I guess I have been using the Etrac for around 3-4 weeks now and was starting to get frustrated by not being able to find any silver or anything deep especially after watching all the great videos some of you post. I have never MD'd before so I am a total newbie and have a steep learning curve.

After doing some research on the computer, I have come to realize that my little town is not that old. Most of the schools and parks are fairly new and the earliest schools were built in the 50's and 60's. I think this is the root cause of my frustrations because I have only been hunting schools and parks in my little town. Come to find out, just a 20-30 minute drive will get me to some parks which began in the mid to late 1800's. So today, I went and hit one of these parks for about 2-21/2 hours.

I found the two Mercs by a old tree and they were only a foot away from each other. One is a 1939 and the other is a 1943D. They were about 6-8 inches deep and the Etrac had no problem locking on to them. The Fe number bouned a little but for the most part it was a good signal. These were found in the first 30 minutes of hunting. That was it for the silvers today but after finding them, I went on to find 5 wheats and the usual clad. One of them has a little spot which looks corroded and I have no idea what to do about that. Any suggestions?? I know you are not supposed to clean them up but I would like these to look clean and shiny.

Anyway, I'm glad to get the silver monkey off my back. It was sure exciting finding my first silvers. Another note: The Mercs are a lot lighter than I expected. For some reason, I expected them to be heavier given that they are silver.

Silver, Silver, Silver!!!! Congratulations!!!!!! The Mercs are the best looking dimes I know of next to seated (because I haven't found one yet....haven't found a Roosevelt either, but I see them in my pocket change). Keep it up 4thWho, there's more to come!!!!

 Nothing like silver to boost your confidence and adrenalin level. Also your research payed off and taught you the number one rule to finding old coins silver or otherwise LOCATION!!! Hope you are starting a trend that will only get better for you,Ray.

Congrats on scoring your first two silvers!! It sure is a great feeling, huh? :super:

I like to clean my common silver coins too. Just use a generous amount (it's cheap) of moistened (with water) baking soda, and rub this baking soda paste on your mercs (one at a time, of course). Place only your thumbs and index fingers on the coin when you rub them with the paste. You should start to see them shine up real fast, and your fingers turning black at the same time. Repeat as necessary. As for the key/semi-key dated silvers, I just run a little water on them to get the dirt off.

Good luck on your next hunt!!

Congrats! Your first silver is always the hardest to find They will come easier now. I hunted for 6 months before my first silver. A member told me they would come more often now and the next day was another. :detecting: Heres to the silver!

Congrats on striking silver for the first time!!! And you got two to boot! Great job!

Very nice coins !

I'm also newer to this hobby - only 8 months - it took me a long time to get my first old silver too - 4 months to get my first Mercury Dime.
But I did dig a 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter yesterday :wiggle:

You see a lot of great find posted in this forum - including a lot of nice old coins.
But keep a few things in mind ...

( A ) From the last poll taken - there are approx. ( 120 to 130 ) E-Trac owner's in this forum - your seeing some the best finds - posted by a small percentage of these people.
( B ) Many of the people in this forum have 10 - 20 - even 30 years or more in this hobby - they have many years of site research and experience in the field.

The E-Trac is also a complex machine for newer people like us to learn - kind of like getting your learners permit in a Ferrari.
The learning curve can be frustrating at times - but I'm really enjoying the process.
In the long term - all that really counts - is that you'll know you have the best machine made and that you know how to use it to it's fullest potential.

Congrats DoctorWho! They will start rolling out of the ground for you now. I went through the same period of frustration with the Etrac and boy am I glad I hung in there until everything made sense.

Congrats!!! Way to go on the Research and the finds.I would hit that place a few more times for sure.HH

I definitely will hit it again. It's a very large old park. I believe it's in the neigborhood of about 100-150 acres. Granted some of the space is taken up by a small lake, buildings, and some newer sport fields but there is still lots of room to detect. I'm sure it will take me a long time to hit all of the park.

One thing I did notice is that there is a lot of trash on the surface like pull tabs and bottle caps which is preventing me from seeing the deeper targets. I am going to have to clean up a area first before I even start looking for the deeper targets. Oh boy, this might take a while.

Thanks to all who posted here with the kind words. I appreciate the hospitality.
