Came in while i was out of town so i was very anxious to get home..i work 3rd shift..worked tuesday night came home wednesday morning and didnt sleep until 9:30pm that night..had been up for 29 hours straight..needless to say this was because of the F5..anyway i think i am going to like this machine very much..took it to the beach with grandpa and his newly aquired(from me)F2..he started out pretty good in dry sand..i found quite a few lead weights in the wet sand..i ended up overtaking him in clad count before we were done..i think hes hooked now..i keep reading my manual on the ground balance part of this machine..can someone please elaborate on this for me..when i pump the machine, when should i stop?when i do stop and the phase number bounces from time to time do i adjust the GB accordingly?

Stop when the two numbers match. Three to five pumps should do it. The phase number changes do to the targets make up. Test some targets and focus on the phase number. Best of luck. You made a good selection.

I also would like some more info on the ground balancing. Like, if you are hunting in disc. mode and want to adjust your g/b, do you have to switch back to all metal to do so? Thanks, Ron.

Congrats on the F-5 purchase. I have had mine out for 4 trips and still learning. I think you can gb still in Disc mode without switching over to am mode. Another user here (Mike) had given me some pretty good info. Switch over to AM mode and set threshold to 0 to +1 and pump your coil while turning the left knob so the two numbers match. I have learned with mine that if there is lots of junk in the ground, my unit goes nuts. If your gain is set to high it just magnifies everything thats in the ground and if your threshold is too high also it really makes things tough. I think it will take lost of practice to get things right. Pay attention to your phase level when over targets. The phase level will change when over targets so it would be good to learn what target ID you have with the phase reading.
GOOD LUCK. Lots of F-5 boards here from people who are mastering this great machine.

I think you would want to be in all metal to make sure you are over clean ground. Or using zero discrimination in discriminate mode.

It doesn't matter if you are in Disc mode or AM mode to ground balance with the Phase button.

Use your pinpoint mode to find a clean peice of ground. Press the Phase button and pump the coil up and down on the ground from about 6" down to the ground fairly rapidly about three to five times until the ground balance number and the phase number match and then release the Phase button. You are balanced. To check your balance ever so often, use the pinpoint button to find clean ground, then pump the coil on the ground and check the two numbers. If you are off by more than one number, rebalance.

To manually balance you have to be in the AM mode. Again use the pinpoint button to find clean ground. Set the threshold to 0 or +1. Pump the coil and get a steady Phase number. Rotate the gb knob until your gb number matches the phase number and you are balanced. If you pump the coil while doing this you will get a visual confirmation from the numbers and an audio confirmation from the threshold tone. At this point you can make any positive or negative offsets the ground balance you may need.

The thing about the F5 is that it lets you know both visually and audibly that you are correctly balanced to the ground conditions. It is perfect.
