Well, it came in the mail yesterday and i'm a happy man. I set it up according to the manual and swiped several good targets to get a feel for how they should sound. I went to my test location (backyard) which has been searched by my XLT. There are a lot of nails in my yard which is a bit frustrating as they seem to sound like silver, except they are on the left of the screen. I did get a wheat penny, but mostly nails. I was running in Iron mask set at -10. I switched to discr and that cleared up the nails, but not all of them. Now that I have been reading this forum, I want to try it with ferrous sounds, as that may help me distinguish the nails. One thing that I have noticed is that the cross hairs bounce around a lot on certain targets. Is this normal for a good target? I have found pinpointing to be pretty easy as I just follow the methods described on this forum. Other than that, I just need practice.
Interesting side note. My neighbors saw me detecting and they wanted me to check their yard too. Also, according to my neighbor, her father grew up in the depression and never trusted banks. He owned a grocery store and whenever a customer paid in a silver dollar, he took it out of the till and into a bucket. WEll, over the years, he amassed quite a collection of dollars. He died about 10 years ago, but when he was alive he told each of the kids a location they should "consider" looking later, like under that tree, next to the fence, etc. he told each kid a different location, but was not clear as to why they should "look". So when he died, the kids knew that he hid money, but not really where. They started cleaning the house as they were going to sell it. as they pulled up the rug, a false floor was there and under it was a few buckets of dollars(five gallon). then in the freezer, they where unwrapping some "pork loins" in meat wrap, when they found it was a load of gold south african coins(kroners?). Well, they thought they should investigate more into checking the back yard. they hired someone to come in and search, but she said that he used a divining rod? that sounds a bit hokey, but sure enough, they found several more buckets in the yard. they put all the coins on a tarp covered pool table and it was like a huge mound. The total amount of all the coins was $80,000, face value. They divided it up by 8(8 kids) and that was that. My neighbor used it to pay off debt, but she said that some of her brothers and sisters buried it( the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree). She is certain that they did not get it all, but they sold the house anyways. So, now it is under the owner ship of someone else, and they know nothing about it. Now, the question, do I (we) even attempt to ask permission to hunt on their property? Do we let them know what is up? "I didn't find much on your property sir, except this bucket. i'll be leaving now". My neighbor wants to search, but she is torn on the ethics. My mouth is watering when she is telling me this story, as I cannot almost believe it. So, we are sitting on it at this moment. She did give me several other leads on places to hunt. A ghost town that is now fields with foundations, areas where they had church revivals, etc. So, it pays to have good neighbors!

Have you tried to bring the SENSIVITY down to about say 18 for a start and switch to MANUAL for searching in your nail laden backyard. I hope we are talking about rusty iron nails and not the "zinced" type.
I encountered what sounds a similar situation and I lowered the SENS with a corresponding of the THRESHOLD@7 being audible it helped a bit. Just bring the SENS up as you go along if you can and as long as you can get a audible THRESH I found it helped buy not picking up so much iron.
