Finally got around to counting and sorting 26 years worth of dug wheat cents !

Finally got to one of my retirement projects ! Took about 4 nights and maybe 8 hours but I went through my jug of wheat pennies I dug over the last 26 years. I was guessing maybe 3-4 thousand were in there and final count was right at 3500. I only separated by decade and did look at each coin for any key dates. Kept an eye out for any 1909 VDB-S, 1914-D, the elusive 1922 and the 1955 double dies but alas, not turned up. Did find fifty dated 1909 of which 6 were the VDB variety. A 1914-S and 1915-S were the only other coins worth more than a few bucks. Here was the final count by decade: 1909-1919: 809. 1920-1929:451. 1930-1939: 383. 1940-1949:1050. 1950-1958: 508. I had about 300 unreadable dates and just threw them in the tumbler to see if I can get any dates off of them. I did find one crusty 1900 indian head in the bunch ! I have at least 3X that amount of memorial cents but I have no interest in sorting those out. One day I'll get them to the Coinstar machine !!! Here is a shot of the sorted coins and the 1909 dates I pulled out.

Wow, Ed you must have got bored really badly.
That sure is a nice haul of wheats. :clapping:
Just think of how many total plugs you have dug in your hunting career.
My buddy and I often speculate on many of those kind of numbers when we are driving on a hunt.

Back in the old days, I used to keep track of the amount I found each year. I wish I kept it up and also wish I kept track of what I bought with the $$$ when I cashed it in. I know I bought a couple $2.50 and $5.00 gold coins as well as a one each of $10.00 and $20.00 gold. Of course that was when gold was about $400.00 an ounce or less. Now I just cash in the yearly clad and buy some silver eagles. I'm guessing I probably averaged about $100.00 bucks a year in clad so maybe about $2600.00 since I started in '87. Also wish I kept track of the payments I got from sending silver and gold jewelry to refiners. Probably another couple thousand there....

Ed...Looks like a lot of work! I have a couple of one pound coffee cans full of wheats that I have not gone thru. May I ask what you used for a tumbler and compound? I have also been using my detector to separate the zinc pennies from the coppers. I put the zincs into my savings and have a can here at home for the copper cents.

Not that I'm counting down the days till I retire (6/14/2027 12pm a Friday afternoon). But I have a Lincoln wheat cent folder that I am trying to fill up with the wheats I find. You have a lot of wheats and I will make you a deal on 6/21/2027 my first week of retirement I will give you a total of my wheats. lol
Well done Ed and heres to many more wheat pennies my friend.
