Finally got another Shieldy!!!!!!!!!! :detecting:

Well-known member
It has been to long since i have gotten some decent detecting time in,,, I got promoted at work and transferred to a new location... So the detecting time has really downsized... But 1 month in at the new location, and I have been promoted again and will be Assistant Manager starting this next Monday :) Any ways... Again it has to long since i have swung the SE.... I was talking to a my friend Jack last night and he was telling me of a place North West of Richmond that he has had some GREAT success in the past.... I have never been there so i was like what the heck ill give it a try.... When i arrived i was pretty excited to start hunting... The place looked sweet... Pretty soon and about 20 feet in i had a good sounding nickel signal... Good sounding because it didn't look so good on the screen.. It was flouting around on the bottom right hand side of the screen... It hit like a old rusty bottle cap... But it had the "tone" of a nickel.. I said what the heck ill dig it up just to see... The ground was really dry... The blade only went in about 3 inches and i had to fight the dry ground the rest... I opened up the hole and stuck the probe in and got a broken up nickel sound.. I figured it was a rusty bottle cap.. I dug down some more and scraped out a old nasty nail,,., After that the sound was sweet.... fumbling around with it a little more i managed to pull my out second 1866 Shield Nickel  After that i walked about a little more... Dug a few nails then i got another DEEP coin sound.. My depth gage was almost completely gone,, and the cross on the screen was flouting around the top right side of the screen and diving me soft tone... I opened up the plug,, Dug down,,, dug down some more,,, and some more and finally got the high tone i was looking for... Right away i hoping.. PLEASE be a Barber or Seated.... NOPE 1912 Wheaty :veryangry:... After that the heat was starting to get at me and i was swimming in sweat.... The main reason i don't hunt much in the summer... I would rather be out there in 10 degree weather than what it is now....... Well started making my way around the field digging some "iffy" sing to signals trying to come up with something... I soon got a shallow hit that i thought for sure was a clad dime... It was only about a inch deep... I dug down not being careful at all... pulled back the little plug and the back of a Mercury dime was staring me in the face :surprised: I grabbed it and flipped it over and read the date 1916 :yikes: AAHHHH I hurried up and flipped it back around looking for that special mint mark.... and sure enough... There was NOTHING LOL Well my hunt was canceled a little early after that because the fin on my arm rest snapped off... and it is a pain detecting without it!!!!! But i am definitely returning after a good rain and a new arm rest lol

The finds from the second set of pictures were all found over about 6 small hunts... I mean about 15 minutes at an outing.... And all were found with my new 6x8 sef.... My favorite coin out of them all is the crusty old Buffalo Nickel.. The reason is... My house was built in the 1920's.. I have pulled coin after coin out of my yard... I have dug every signal that has made a beep with all of my detectors.... You should have seen my front yard a year ago with hundreds of little brown patches of grass every where!! But i have never found a Buffalo in my yard... As soon as i got the 6x8 as well as well as every new piece of detecting equipment i took it to the front yard... Five minutes in i pulled that Buffalo from 6 inches deep... I couldn't believe it... I have covered that area over and over with every detector and every coil and never have gotten that signal before.... So right then that justified getting the new coil lol The two mercs i found back to back walking behind my friend Tim in a trashy area... The coil seems to work very well... I wasn't so sure about it at first... It really seemed to like rusty nails... But after using it in different outings in different areas. It's a real winner!!!! There is no mistaking going over a silver coin with that bad boy!!!
So far i have only got about 7 inches of depth out of it... But I'm sure it will go farther.... It's worth giving it a try!!!
Thanks for looking everyone and good luck!!!!!!

Nice finds. It's good to get a shield Nickel with a readable date. The last couple I have found have been so ugly & pitted that I couldn't see a date even under a magnifying glass.

Geez bro...you are as addicted as I am...and make the same excuses to get a new coil too:clapping:

I just bought a used 14" Excelerator coil off of the Findmall classifieds a few weeks ago.

It's one coil I had never tried before...so I figured what the heck.

The first thing I dug with it was a merc from about 8".:smoke:...a well spent $85:bouncy:

Take care bud

Congrats on your 2nd Shield Nickel! Those are one tough coin to find up this way. Hope you find more goodies with that 6x8 S.E.F. Coil in previously hunted spots you hunted before. Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

Congrats on the shield nickel and when we get a good hard rain it should be worth the trip back!! I'd say the Merc was shallow because the area you found it had been the spot where they put the dirt the dug up making the parking lot!! Congrats on the promotion too!! Very well deserved!!

HAHA Thanks Montana!!

Thanks Neal!! I hope your finds continue!!!
