Nice Barber.
I recall I was visiting family once in Florida. Without knowing anywhere else to go, I went to a local park to detect one morning, while everyone else slept.
I hit all the usual spots and was stumped - Now what? Then I noticed something. The park/community center was sitting right next to an oak tree about 15 across - it was huge.
So I went over to it and detected around it. I found several early Wheats, and a V nickle, right beneath the canopy, at only 1" or so. I was pretty stoked, so I worked my way around to the roots of three.
In the crook of the big roots, I got a smooth signal and dug out a pile of dirt. Nothing - the target had come out with the sandy soil.
I poked at the dirt and out came the biggest coin I had seen up til then. It slid down the dirt pile and came to the rest at the bottom.
It was a 1907-O Liberty Head half dollar (Barber). I had hunted all over that park and hadn't found naything to speak of; that is, until I took a look around.
Now I always do a reconnoiter before turning on my detector.
BTW, if you're ever detecting in Orange Park, FL, in the park at the intersection of Kingsley and Hwy 17, well... dont bother with the big oak tree out back of the park center.
