I know people must look at my site and my posts and think that the V3 must be one deep seeking metal detector, but the truth is that I have found it very frustrating lately. I had been battling constant ground Falsing. I also felt that I was not getting as much depth as I should. This is especially frustrating because you never know if it is the detector or the simple fact that there is nothing deep under the coil.
Although yesterday produced another amazing first for me (the 1851 three cent piece, one of three found by me and my buddies), once again I was haunted by false signals. (The difference between ground falsing and EMI is that you dont get the false signals when you hold the detector at waist level.)
My program is a modified Relic program. Nothing major is changed, just typical things, MIxed Mode, Tone ID, and adjustments to things like Recovery, Filters, etc. I also accept all targets down to -40. The problem was that I constantly had to lower the RX down to ridiculous levels (usually below 5) to keep it quiet. Even with recommended RX at 15 I had to lower it all the way down. I am sure it cost me some depth as I could not raise the Discriminate much higher without getting EMI. I thought it was the coil for a while but then I got 3 more coils and all were more or less the same.
So last night I spent studying the program charts in the back of the manual to see what was out of sync. If I couldn't figure it out I was going to box it up and send it out to Sweet Home. Then it hit me. The All Metal sensitivity on the Relic program is way out of line with most other programs, so I lowered it a bit down, and also lowered my Discriminate down a few.
Fast Forward to this afternoon. No time for detecting. Much yard work to be done. But I was dying to try out my new wireless headphones and the wife was out running errands, so what would be the harm if I took 10 minutes to try out the headphones? And what better spot than a 6'x6' berm where I have found a bunch of silver with my DFX. Because of its small size, I covered literally every inch of it in the past but no site is ever completely hunted out. The ground probe gave me a recommended RX of 6 (not surprising near homes). It ran so smooth with no falsing.! After a few short sweeps right in the center of the berm I got a very strong signal. The VDI was jumpy (which is expected on deep coins) going from around 79 up to 90. It had a very wavy Analysis screen, but it pinpointed nicely with the Eclipse 950 coil at about 8.5 inches. I dug a deep plug with my shovel and out popped the Rosie.
I never had any complaints regarding my DFX's depth, but I know it missed this one. Judging by the Analyze screen it may have been on its side, just out of range of the DFX. I was beginning to have doubts about the V3's Depth capabilities, but this find put that to rest. It is the deepest coin I have found so far with the V3.
Not bad for a 5 minute outing with no traveling involved!
Advice for the day, DO NOT TRY TO RUN SO HOT!! Bring it down a notch!
