Finally broke the 1800's!!

So we had to head down south a little ways to drop off a car we sold and I finally had a chance to detect a old church that was built in the late 1800's. It has pretty much been raining here for the last 24 hours and I wasn't sure it was going to happen today. Well the big man upstairs took pity on me and gave me a 2 hour break in the rain. I really had high hopes for this church and excitedly got my rig set up and ready to go. I started swinging and I'll be danged if there wasn't nails everywhere..it was so bad the explorer was locked up with no threshold and I couldn't go slow enough to even get a single target. It was extremely frustrating and I let a couple of cuss words fly then caught myself and had to remember I was at a church  Anyways I had to figure something out so I put the Explorer into AM and ferrous sounds and was able to get only one signal that wasn't trash. It turned out to be a 1889 "v" nickel. I know it's nothing great but it is really hard to find 1800's coins here in North Texas and I felt very blessed to have dug my very first "v" nickle and break into the 1800's as well! Looks like a bunch of us had awesome digs today!! Happy hunting guys!!

Man, medic...that's the nicest V I've ever seen come out of the ground! Mine are usually pretty UGLY! :)

Congrats on the pre-1900 first!

I can relate to your story...I hunted an old church back home in PA last summer, was first erected in 1800 but burned a few times and had to be re-built. I, like you, was disappointed to find literally a CARPET of square nails around the building...but, like you, switched to open Iron Mask and ferrous sounds, and picked a couple of pre-1900 Injuns from the mess...

Nice job changing tactics and digging your oldest coin ever, as a result... :)

Way to go GrumpyM that is a nice V you found.
Congratulations on breaking into the 1800s it won't be your last for sure! :clapping::thumbup:

Great shape too. Congratulations.

I was really hoping to find a seated out there but just couldn't get it done..I really think there is more more coins out there to be had..just being masked by the iron. Plus it starting pouring down rain and I had to go. I only worked a small area and hope to go back again soon. Thanks for all the positive comments!! Hope everyone had a productive weekend!! HH guys!!

Man if you are only able to find one you sure picked a pretty one. That thing looks great for a dug nickle. Mine always look like red play money or something. Good thinking on the mode change. Maybe the same thing with a five inch coil next time. Thanks, for sharing.
