Film Scanners?

What exactly do film scanners do? If I buy a film scanner does it turn you pictures into digital format? if so is it a pain in the butt to use? Thanks

The film scanner basically takes a picture of your film. You can vary the number of pixels or quality.
Some scanners come with a very handy program called 'Digital Ice' which really improves the quality of the scan.

I use a film scanner. Biggest problem is cost. This is one item that you have to buy a good one or forget it. Best place to look id ebay. I have a discontinued Kodak bought from ebay. Expect to spend at least 300 for one.
