US Mint says goodbye to $1 presidential coins
Brian Kersey / AP

The U.S. Treasury Department said that there are 1.4 billion surplus $1 Presidential coins just sitting in the Federal Reserve
By Marisa Taylor
Have you ever seen a $1 presidential coin? Neither have we. Except that one time when we received seven of them in change from a MetroCard machine in the New York City subway system and, perplexed as to where to fit such weighty coins in our dainty-sized wallet, we relegated them to the bottom of our junk drawer.

And perhaps for that very reason, Vice President Joseph Biden announced Tuesday that the U.S. Mint would halt the production of those pesky $1 coins for circulation, because they

They needed to take it one step further, discontinue the one and two dollar paper bill and get on track with the coin operated industry to put those one dollar coins to use, instead of weighing down our pants to tighten up our belts one more notch. Governments sure like to waste money! :(

That's what all the other countries have done when switching form paper to clad. That really sucks for you guys! I just happen to count my one & two dollar coins last nite. Below are my results

179 x $1.00 = $179.00
89 x $2.00 = $178.00

......................... $357.00

I pity you guys. That's about as backward as it gets! like John said; we dumped our $1 and $2 notes 22 years ago back, because of their very short shelf life. They even have considered changing the $5 note to a coin at times. It's a lot cheaper as coins last for years,. too bad that we benefit from it.
It sounds crazy to makes a ridiculous amount of coins, then sit on them.
My comments about the US medical system, is just that it baffles me that you guys seem to work on a users pay set up, which means if you're broke, then you're up the creek. Here in Oz, we have both a public and a private medical system. The public system is there for everyone, and it's partly funded a medicare levy of 1.5% on our wages. That means if you are an Aussie, then you don't have to pay when you go into hospital. (doesn't cover ambulance though, unless you are being transfered from one hospital to another). The private system allows for you to see the doctor of you choice and is often faster than the public system, but you pay for it.(medical insurance helps with the cost.) I understand that the US President tried to bring in some sort of public system earlier this year, but it got knocked on the head. Am I wrong. Have I missed something? (I hope I haven't strayed too far off subject, but I am curious as to how you guys think about the medical system.

We detectorists here had hopes of the US going to the 1$ coins over the bills. Plus the fact that lots of young people now carry plastic, and wear fake jewelry. The fresh drop beach finds tell a lot about the changing times and demographic trends. The rotten clad we now have is stamped shallow, and disintegrates quickly as well. It has forced us to modify our hunting style somewhat. No telling how much gold and silver has been wrung out of our populace due to its high price and the state of the economy. That being said, there is still a lot of untouched/overlooked ground here, and we have some awesome tools at our disposal, satelite imagery being one. As for the Medical system, thats a whole study in and of itself.

I thought it was funny that Canadians used $1-$2 coins over paper money when I first moved up here from the US. After time I realized how much better it is to have them as coinage versus bills. While the $1 US will always be iconic to me, it's past it's due. Same goes for pennies sadly, I don't see the point of having them as currency anymore.

Now we need to send all them dollar coins over to China to help pay off our dept...Merry Christmas China!!!...lol

HH,

I'd like to see the U.S. one dollar bill and the five dollar bill replaced, although that would start a lot public squealing for a while. I'd also say to any who agrees, write your congressman, although right now I'm not even sure they can pass a budget. :ranting:
