Well I went out Sunday and practiced some more in the manual, all metal mode. The Scorpion did exactly what I wanted and found the pockets of black sand in an area where the black sand is scarce. Paid off, was able to pan out some flakes and a couple of pickers.

Oh yeah!:super:That's what I'm talkin' about!:garrett::detecting:Scorpion rocks!:yo:Congrats on findin' some o'that yella metal!:cheers:Hope ya find lots more!:thumbup:Happy Hunting!:)

JOHNMARKHAM, black sand is about the heaviest stuff you'll find in creeks and riverbeds, other than gold, so where black sand accumulates in bends, eddies and deep holes, that will also be the most likely spot where gold accumulates. Nothing magic about both being found in similar places, just the physical properties of black sand (weight) are closely related to that of gold. Of course, sometimes there will be tons of black sand and not a speck of gold, but it sure is a good place run a sluice or pan, just in case. Jugg

Well said.:thumbup:Yeah, black sand is mostly composed of two iron oxides. Magnetite and hematite. It has a specific gravity of 5(I think)so it is five times heavier than water. That means it is twice as heavy as the rest of the dirt. Gold has a specific gravity of 19. That's why it agitates toward the bottom of the gold pan:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Good info guys. It is kind of funny to me, that when I pan I am almost afraid I will wash the gold out. Not the case though, the gold almost seems like it is glued to the bottom of the pan.

It is the coolest thing to me when the bland sand shifts away and the gold can be seen coming through.

Find the black sands then take a speaker magnet or a prospector mag like i have and pick up the black sands and then you will see the gold if there is any. Seperate the sands from the gold in a gold pan. Get enough of the fine gold and have it smelted. Or do it yourself -- cut a potato in half scoop with a spoon a hollow in it put powder flux in bottom ad gold and more flux heat with a jewelers torch it will make a button.

At all costs be carefull.
