Field testing the S.E.F. coil

I got my S.E.F. coil, nicknamed the Butterfly coil, just after the 4th of July, but because of the heat I really have not been able to give it a good shake down. This weekend I was able to make a couple of hunts where I hunted in the shade when ever I could. The coil weighs about the same as the White's 6x10 DD coil. I found that the VDI numbers to be accurate with the exception of bottle caps which read as 1 cent. I dug a lot of bottle caps on my last two hunts. Other than the bottle caps I had no problems with any other numbers being inaccurate. I dug a Kennedy half dollar and it gave a VDI reading of 90 and indicated that it was 50 cents. The coil is a concentric coil and I have not used one for some time as I perfer DD coils. I found that the coil pinpoints spot on just in front of where the rod attaches to coil. Being a large coil target seperation is an issue and I found that it did not work well in heavy trash but that is to be expected of a large coil, but once I was away from the heavy trash it worked great. I hunted in the out field of a ball park and out in the middle of a couple of parks and found a lot of coins that I had missed on previous hunts. The deepest coin I dug was at about 5 inches. I dug an iron target just to see what it was and it was at about 10 inches and I found that it was a bolt. I can't wait to test this coil out with some relic hunts in the gold camps in central Idaho. It will be nice just to get some cooler temps and really see how this coil is going to work out. So far it is doing a great job of coin shooting. HH Dennis in Idaho

Its not fair Dennis that you get to test these coils in Idaho. I should get to test them in Illinois. Rob

I have been using the Eclipse 5.3 quite a bit lately. The last 2 weeks I put the 10x6 DD back on, just to shake things up a bit.

The major difference I noticed was steel bottlecaps sounded like a coin target with the 10x6. Even if I ran up to the edge, there was not much indication of iron. It made me imagine the 5.3 was better at not getting fooled because it was a concentric design.

Your report shoots a hole in that theory! It must be because of the physical size of the coil.

Your haul has a nice ratio of quarters to everything else. I'm doing good if I can turn up 3 quarters a day. Whenever I get a reading of 88+ (and it turns out to be clad) it's 2 quarters instead of the half!

Great finds Dennis, that coil looks and sounds interesting.

I may have to eat my words on this coil as I have called it a concentric coil. It is a double eliptical. I have pinpointed with the coil as if it were concentric. I will let you know for sure soon as JW contacts me. Irregardless it pinpoints well. HH Dennis in Idaho
