Field of Dreams...:surprised:

Had to travel for business this week...found some towns on the Mapquest that looked promising...left thurs morning at 6am...hit the first stop 3hrs later...big sportsfield, concessions, etc...clad everywhere, 25 degrees with a cold wind, high graded Q's, wet clay soil with ice crystals, grass was flat..easy sweeping and stabbing...back on the road and hit a place I've stopped at before 250 miles from home when on business, big place, always a good century location, but I only get to spend a short time as I am generally heading through and have to be somewhere...got my dream coin! the Franklin Half![attachment 304577 fieldofdreams-3.jpg][attachment 304582 fieldofdreams-1.jpg]

Worked the rest of Thurs and all day Friday late into the night...got up early Sat am and pulled into the 'Ben Franklin' spot right on the button at 8am...fired up the 70...sort of wore out in 3hrs, which is generally my limit, but it was nice and overcast, high 30 temps, really a perfect day to detect! ...Thought I might just head home but decided to drive around this little town and scope things out, I knew I had a good count coming in sniping Q's...

Old hand carved limestone curbs! old town, run down, a guy that hunts curbstrips would really get excited here! Found a huge park, big chip totlots, BB courts, you name it...I have NEVER seen such a place carpeted with coins as this place was..and as y'all know, I've been into some pretty heavy clad carpets...I told myself to settle down and try to go methodical on this motherhubbard, but of course, I didnt! Just to work the periphery of the BB courts would take 3 days...the totlots were packed with clad, (gotta be gold in there) EVERYWHERE was a massive cacophany of coins! Seriously, I have never seen anything like it..surely a place for a small coil....I sniped just the Q's, with the 11"dd..stooping and stabbing like a madman...I know I had coil over 1000 dimes, but I ignored them and just went for the Q's...well, I went to do a pouch dump twice...looked at the clock, it was 2:30...so I decided to drive 100 miles North to that other little town I started out at on Thurs and look around a bit, (and to give my ears a break)...got there at a quarter after 4...Sun goes down at 5...found a middle school with a huge pea gravel totlot, and there were dimes everywhere![attachment 304579 fieldofdreams-2.jpg] It was great kicking gravel instead of reaming the driver through clay, so I settled in to clean it out! It was dark when I left with this loot and drove on home...[attachment 304581 fieldofdreams.jpg]
Heres what 306 Q's look like in a 16oz cup with a BF Half on top! And the line up..I kept all the hunts separated in three coffee cups...Thurs hunts combined, and todays park hunt separate from todays final school totlot hunt (lotsa dimes).. .. .[attachment 304583 fieldofdreams-4.jpg]

Definitely today was a record day for me, both in count and dollar amount..316 coins for 57.85 just today alone!...for a total10 hr hunt, 600 mile 60 hr round trip, on the 'job'.. total was 451 coins for 85.77...I figure nobody hunts this clay on account of when its dry its like concrete, and when its wet, it would stick to a digger most damnably...I tell you boys, this day was what I have been training for all these years, ..(never ground balanced once, 60 sens, DP tones, 70 had the half deads in her from the Pro) You cant snipe Q's in a clad carpet unless you use DP tones.. F70 Quick Broom, I have not yet found the top end speed of this thing, but this post should give you an idea of what she is capable of...

Wow, you have done something very well that I think most of us dream about. Road tripping to a new place in search of goodies. You were quite successful. I think most of us are afraid of failure and never really try what you pulled off. Congrats. I have never mastered the fast, cherry picking style of hunting. Thanks for letting us know that these kind of things are still possible.

Amazing, mud.
Finding spots like this is something you do so well, but recovering so much in your allotted time is also amazing.
Imagine how many other coins you could dig if you lived in the area and had the time, not to mention the jewelry that is also probably laying around these places.
A huge CongratZ...now get some rest!

Nice going there "Dr Mudd"
I nominate you as an honorary Doctorate of F70 Coin Detectorology!

Wow! Now that is some kind of road trip.

Yeah, you have the quick broom mastered, no doubt. One heck of a haul and congratulations on the Ben. :beers: HH jim tn

Mud friend buddy....how bad are your knees??? Jesus your hunts hurt my knees lol and my right knee was replaced in 2005 ;) so now what pay off your house? Buy q new car? Oh fantstic job!!!!!!

Thanks guys...Hey Cometguy, the F70 really likes to go fast, but a fellow cant keep up with it on most days on account of getting overheated...this day was cool and overcast, so it was just right!

.....Hey Revier, I was thinking about you when hunting around the BB courts, you would have gone bloody nuts there!...I would like to retire in this town! It would take many years to cover all the locations..heck just to clean the trash out of one totlot would take an entire day...

Hey Bill, stooping and stabbing clad is actually not hard on the body for some reason...seems a guy gets an overall workout with no place in particular hurting more than the rest!

Thanks Jim and Coinrescue..I really enjoy speed hunting in heavy trash with this rig, on account of the Winter coming and all, figured it was my last chance for a good haul this year...:sadwalk:..
Mud..

Absolutely amazing. Just one question if you will. What settings were you using to find that cold cup of brewskie there I see in the background. Don't give away any trade secrets unless you want to. :buds:

A super duper trip! That's one nice Ben Franklin, that find alone would make anyone's day or month for that matter. I seriously don't think anyone can keep up with you finding clad coins. You are the master!!!!!!!!!!!! I tip my hat to you Mud.

One heck of a haul. Be careful posting totals like that or the tax man will be after his cut!

Big Congrats Mud, Thought i remembered you saying last year when I found my 50' Franklin that the Big Ben was on your short list of must find coins... Glad you got it , and the better part of the cost of a new coil in clad

Congrats brother, have a good Christmas,

Lakota

You are correct Lakota! It WAS my Dream coin! I actually dreamed about finding one for several years now, but when I woke up, I couldnt remember the details of the location!

Looking at others posts, I know its very rare to find a BF Half, even for guys that have been doing this for a long time...seems Walkers and even Barber halfs are found more frequently than the BF...so this one was unexpected and sweet, it gave me the burst of adrenaline I needed to really hit this place..It was right next to the parking area, about 8' out in front of my car ...right in there with bottlecaps and parking lot trash, nice tight ping, 5" deep...hit it on the first stab with the driver, and felt the unmistakeable 'thunk' of what I figured was a half, or a heavy chunk of aluminum, they both feel the same...I reamed a hole, retouched the coin, jammed my finger down in there and got it tipped and pulled it right out...it came out just as shiny and fresh as in the picture!.

Hey 2MT, I needed a few cold ones to settle down when I got home, I was still pretty jacked up from all the coffee and coins!...:buds:

Thanks TVR and Tab...my main concern is what the local Coinstar guy must think about where is all this dirty money coming from? Boy is he gonna get a load this week! I may dump it into several of his machines just to spread it out and get him cussing all day long as he makes his route!
Mud

From an economic ROI standpoint, I spent @50bucks on gas for this trip, another 10 on coffee...didnt buy any food come to think of it...had a few apples and oranges in the car...then of course the beer and smokes, so I broke even or slightly behind...like normal:sadwalk:

Brother its been so slow on the silvers this year that the 44 merc i found Sunday night had me jacked up to make a run to dawn lol So I feel you there, But I didn't. I was good and I am sure my wife loves me more for it

Hope this weather keeps its mellow tone for this time of year.

We all could use more silver in the hole.

good luck out there,

Lakota
