Field Hunting

A little help here please. How do you guy's find the places that you field hunt. Plat maps, hear say from the old times etc. Also, Do you key in on old homesteads, churches, schools etc. I have never field hunted before but after seeing the finds that come out of them I would really like to try it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!!!

I think you answered your own question Robbie. We look at old maps for towns that are long gone now. Old plat books and Atlas's also show old schools and churches. Once found and located, you need to do some door knocking on neighboring farm houses. They might not own the property, but they always know who does.

I go to the library and get the most current plat and make calls. Saves the driving around looking for people that are home.

Ok, I have located some old schools and churches. They are no longer there and have been gone for quite some time. I know about where they use to sit (building that is). How far in front, past, and to the left and right of the location do you detect before calling it good. The buildings were all one room I do know that so they were not super big. This should be the last question about field hunting and I will leave you guy's alone.

You will want to hunt a large area around the building as well. There were things like the outhouse, play areas, picnic/gathering areas and especially old churches had a "parking lot" for horse and buggies. The "parking lots" is where I have had the most luck on old churches.

Lots of horse and buggy, loose horse shoes mask coins, did any overload signals, relic mode is best.

Hi Robbie
Here's a photo of the old school I told you about hunting the other day...Only had less than an hour
to hunt before dark but will hit it this weekend (I Hope) The Lady who gave me permission to hunt
said her grandmother went to school there....She said a couple guy's hunted it 15 years ago
but I did manage to pull a 1920 wheat and a 1950 before dark...Grass was thick and around 8" high
making it difficult to sweep that 11" Pro coil...There was A lot of iron so the Detech 6" EQ pro 2
will head up the hunt the next time....Those wheats weren't very deep! And I doubt the guy's that
hunted it before had Minelabs...Ought to be a few prizes awaiting there...
