Few questions need answering on g2 please

gaz1969

New member
Just got a g2 and have a few quiries i could do with answering to put my mind at rest please folks.

1: battery indicator dropped to 2 bars after 1.5 hours of use with new duracel battery is this correct?

2:when using pinpoint,it gives a depth reading, but if i take my finger off and then press it again quickly while pinpointing the reading still happens but the word"depth" is missing, can somebody please try and replicate it for me?

3:Sometimes i notice when i turn the gain right up to 100 in discriminate mode, sometimes it stops at 99 not 100,you might have to try this a few times just to see if it does it,try slowely and quiker please.

I really hope you can answer this soon as im worried its not right.please someone with a g2 try for me.

Big thanks in advance

Gary

Congrats on getting a G2. There's no 'perfect', do-it-all detector, but the G2 is certainly a versatile unit for a lot of applications.

After 1

Hey Monte thanks for the reply, been detecting about a year or so,come back to it now i have more time,i have over the last few months tried an array of detectors but i think this g2 is going to keep me happy,i love the weight,i love the way it works, simplicity, and sseems presice,if you know what i mean.

Just wanted to make sure all was well, went out tonight with it,i could run it on my ploughed field at 100 and discrim around 30,didnt fidn much as done the field to death but just wanted to see how it compared to the fisher f70 i have yesterday.
i only had the fisher a day, wasnt for me,ran really hot and chattery, even with low sensitivty, too noisey!

before that i had an xterra70,before that a explorer2,before that a c3mx and before that an ace250.

have you got any tips for me?

I also only have the stock coil,i think thats a DD if im correct, whats this coil like?

Also could you give me an idea of depth i should be getting with sat something similar to a uk 2pence piece or a penny.

thanks gaz :)
OH... one more thing, when i first turn the g2 on with a new battery,it initially shows 2 bars then goes up to 3 after a sec, hows this on yours,is that normal? :)

If you've only tried "an array" over the past year, then odds are you still didn't get them mastered. That would be especially true if they were a wide variety from different manufacturers with different types of adjustments and built-in performance characteristics. The G2 will be fun to use, and fun to use. It is relatively simple, but like all detectors it does take some learning. In doing so, you'll learn the strengths and weaknesses for you and your types of sites.

Learning a metal detector, for me, is a lot easier than reading a lot of posts from those in foreign lands. I have a bad habit of reading words the way they are spelled, and for us here in the US, 'laugh' is pronounced like 'laff', and 'ploughed' is pronounced 'pluffed', as I read it, and I needed to insert 'plowed'. :heh: Sorry, just a moment in time with my :ukflag: Vs :usaflag: translation.

I haven't used the F70 much at all, but I like some other models more. Some might seem a bit chattery, if I am too close to some offending EMI source, but that's what the Sensitivity control is for.

Quite a variety, and some definite extremes from the upper model to the lesser offering.

Yes, a few. One is to learn the Discriminate adjustment settings so that you can set the Low-Tone/High-Tone breakpoint where it will work best for you. Two, don't hesitate to invest in the little 5" round DD coil for hunting trashier and/or brushier sites. Third, learn and master the times you can use a faster sweep speed and also when you have to use more sweep control, based upon the ground mineral make-up and the density of the ground challengfes (such as rocks, etc.).

Fourth, set the Sensitivity level as high as you can and remain stable. Fifth, use the least Discrimination you can tolerate. Personally, I usually leave my G2 Discrimination set at '0' and then listen for any good hit to investigate. That's when I want to 'find it all" at a site. If the main problem item is iron nails, I only use enough Discrimination to just barely reject or just 'tick' on most iron nails.

Sixth, remember than the G2/Gold Bug pro were basically designed as gold nugget locating detectors and, operating at 19.2 kHz, they tend to be a little more responsive on the lower-conductive targets. Seventh, the reverse of that statement therefore implies that the G2/Gold Bug Pro are actually less responsive on higher-conductive metal targets, such as big silver and copper coins.

Eighth, don't hesitate to search some sites in the All Metal mode with a slight audio threshold hum. The All Metal mode will definitely get much better depth than the motion Discriminate mode. The G2/GB Pro are designed more for nugget hunting in the All Metal mode. The Disc. mode is there, and functional, but isn't designed to produce fantastic depth. Instead, it is very functional depth performance, especially on the lower-conductive targets.

You have two search coil choices with the G2. The 11" DD coil, elliptical in shape and quite light weight, that is good for general searching and coverage if hunting a beach, a plowed field, or a larger open area. I seldom use mine, however, because most of the sites where I use my G2 are very trashy, especially with iron nails and building debris.

For me, the G2 is a compliment to the Teknetics Omega, which is also light-weight, and uses the same rod system. They also share the 11" and 5" coils. Since I have the stock 10" concentric on the Omega, I leave the 5" DD on the G2 for the excellent performance it can provide, and I keep the 11" DD coil mounted to a spare lower rod to be used on either model.

I don't have one of those UK coins handy to compare, but I can tell you that the G2 works fine, and does 'OK' on lower-conductive and smaller-sized targets. Higher-conductive targets, like a 1 ounce silver piece, or a big US silver dollar, and even the smaller 50

Wow your 2 post in reply to my questions are the most comprehensive i have ever had,and i do really appreciate it as its just the info i was looking for.
I will take note of all you said and put it into practice.

Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

Thanks Gaz ;)
