went back to the Chautaqua grounds today and spent 4 hrs. managed to pull out a few more keepers. Found 1896 Quarter,18-- shield nickel,18-- indian head well worn. Thanks for looking.
P.S. tried to post these as before they were cleaned and after.

Nice! Can you give us some ideas of depth you're finding these at? Plowed or farmed fields, lawn pasture or wooded?

It is a field and has been no till for about 13 yrs. before this it had been plowed most coins are averaging about 4". The one that surprised me the most was the 1871 half dime which registered at 6" and it really sounded off good. The only thing that I don't understand is the shield nickels they register round pull tab in the enhanced mode and nickel in the salt mode. I don't know if this is because the ground has been disturbed.

The idea of two modes is in advanced facets cover different areas to enhance your chances to dig older coins while in the regular(salt mode) basically the facets are generally the same as a convential CZ so items may read different in the two modes..In this case I would feel we must remember that older nickles read different than Jefferson nickles and would feel the condition of the nickle and its different mettalic content probably is the answer to the nickle readings. Actually shield nickles read lower so should be vice versa as in the advanced mode the nickle segment has been widened to get older nickles but judging from the condition of the coins found they could certainly land in oddball facets and feel your unit is working fine...

whats the deal with gold rings? I went to some old fairgrounds hoping to find some jewelry but only found clad. I took off a gold rind I always wear and tossed it on the ground, it read Sq. tab in both modes with no bounce. Does the dirt matrix pertain to gold as well? ..I was told gold mineral wont leach into the soil. I dont know what the composition of the ring is, the only markings on it is 585, Im just wondering why it didnt come up hightone. I baught this machine so I wouldnt have to dig all the midtone stuff hoping for jewelry, do I have to start digging everything?

gold rings read different according to size and amount and carat of the gold. i have dug some that read zinc but most will read sqare tab or lower. sounds like you machine is working fine. the last one i dug read in the nickle range.

Have to agree with Chuck from Ky. it depends on size of object and amount of gold. I have only dug one gold item which was a cuff link. It bounced from mid to high tone and bounced from round tab to nickel. I have experimented in the backyard (air test) and found my wedding band hit at mid-tone foil. I have a 1986 $5.00 gold piece (bought not dug) it registers mid-tone sq. tab and last I have my class ring which registers high-tone zinc penny. The 1986 $5.00 gold piece is about the size of a dime. I think if it was the size of an old $5.00 gold piece (nickel size) it would maybe hit hi-tone. My setting s were disc-0, sens-4.5,ground bal. 6. Enhanced mode. I know there's guy's on here who have dug a lot of gold items maybe they will chime in.
