Festival Metal Detecting

New member
The town park is hosting a huge festival this weekend. 25-30,000 people each day Saturday and Sunday. I have heard from the town employees that there are always 5-10 guys up there swinging metal detectors the Monday following.

Much of the vending is on paved areas but there are two grassy areas that get a lot of traffic too.

I have the new 2500 GTI with about 7 hours of experience. I am debating using primarily the Ace 250 with which I have more experience.

I guess I want tips on discrimination, I am thinking set it fairly low to look for mostly new stuff. Which detector to take, I'll probably have both with me anyway. General tips on finding things that haven't worked their way into the ground. Our Fourth of July was rained out this year so this will be my first such detecting experience.

Thanks for looking.

If the same areas have been hit many times then I would think that new clad is all you'll find. I would just set either detector on coins and start swinging.

Take the 250 as everything will be on top of the ground or nearly so. Get there before daylight as the others will be there. It will be like a competition hunt so you'll need to work fast and the 250 is designed for "fast". Run your sensitivity at no more than four bars. Use the big coil if you have it. Hunt with some discrimination as there will be a lot of junk. Watch for paper money as it gets dropped. Good luck.

Also depends on what you are looking for. Want to find all the pennies that were dropped then put coin mode on or custom with 5 on the right and nickle on. Other wise, put four on the right and the nickle and forget pennies. Or run in jewelery and go for it all. Pop tops and anything in between..........

We had a big feast thing at my big park a few weeks back. I got there early. Already there were half a dozen swingers here and there. They were going though the place like it was on fire. I've been back since a number of times. Not only are the pennies still there but a LOT of clad. I take my time when doing a place like that. That's why I've pulled $126.97 (plus a number of rings and other stuff) from that park in the last few months. I TAKE MY TIME and grid over and over........

It was just awful at the park after the festival. There were about 500 trash cans all over the place. Why anybody threw their junk on the ground is beyond me, and it looks like most did. A metal detector was useless. A few guys got there before me and I followed their holes and repaired a bunch. They weren't digging nickels or pop tops because I found a few along their trail. Nice to know the left all the gold for me too. I'm sure I'll find more after the clean the place a bit. Had a better morning at a park in a neighboring village. Nothing great. One junk pendant, an older NYC transit authority token (my second from that site) and 6 bucks in change including two wheat's. I did dig everything and I mean everything as evidenced by the 24 clad pennies I found. I think I need about a week off from metal detecting.

No photos taken or necessary.

Yeah the public ain't to clean at affairs like that and leave it in a mess. How many beeper swingers showed up?

I went sort of early and the park was closed and the workers were busy cleaning and removing temporary fences so I went to the next town down the road to a park. When I went back at 2:30 the park was still closed. I ran into my friend who is second in command at the park and he said the park just opened. I asked if any MDers had been there and he said he saw two, told me where they were swinging and that they didn't stay long. They got there early and must have parked on the street and hiked in. I was getting 1 or 2 beeps every swing in the areas of main traffic. I went to a cleaner area, where the other MDers were operating, and putzed around for an hour. I think I found 12 coins only two of which were on the surface.

We just had a street fair here in San Diego and a grassy park had all the carnival rides. I went directly to the area underneath where the 'Kamikaze' ride was. This is a large pendulum that turns people upside-down. Easy coin pickings on the surface, though not as much as I would have expected. Maybe the workers picked up all the quarters before I got there. I'll get there earlier next year.

Yeah they used to call that type of ride " The Hammer." And the Carneys do pick up all the loose change and they'll leave riders hanging upside down so they will lose stuff.
