Ferret Hot Head 5 inch coil for the Sovereign anyone ever use one?

I saw one for sale somewhere? I just think since then the BBS coils evolved into great coils with the Tornado. No I never used one. I don't even know if it is waterproof. I would stick with a known champ.

I bought the little Hot Head coil at a good price and was curious about its performance. What I found so far I think its just a earlier name used for the Excellarator coil sold from Kellyco. In a couple of days I'll find out. Thanks Ron

The old Hot Head coil line was junk according to most people who used them at least on other machines. They didn't go deeper or even as deep as smaller stock coils is what most people said. That was years ago. On the other hand, a 5" coil doesn't need all that much depth as it's being used for seperation so you might have a winner there for trashy areas.

Critterhunter,I'll take it out to some junk area parks and see how well it works.I got it off of Ebay the guys add said pin # 6 pulled out and sold it as not working. As most of us know pin six is not needed or blank for Sovereign coils.Went out today and used Matts old Tornado 800 coil I bought here on the classifieds. He said its cord was too short 46 inches to reach his GT box with an after market shaft. With my S-1 probe I mount in front of the handle and that's a measured distance of 27 inches, another plus of using the S-1.Anyway no silver coins but five wheat's three in the 1920's and a 1932 Canadian penny, dollar in clad and a silver ring.Later Ron

Boy there is a lot of truth in your signature

I don't know but I would suspect it's a double D. So far as I know the Detech 8" coil was the only concentric ever made for the Sovereign, but I could be wrong. I just remember the Hot Heads were made back in the late 80's early 90's or so or perhaps into the late 90's (can't remember). I think you used to be able to get them for Garretts along with a few other makes. I remember people saying the 12" Hot Head got no more depth than an 8 or 9" stock coil on some machines.

For those wondering, don't confuse the Hot Head with the Hot Shot. The 12" Hot Shot is said to give 2 or 3" more depth on at least machines like the Whites 6000 XL. I tried two brand new ones of those on a QXT Pro and they would get unstable after about 5 to 10 minutes of use. Never could figure out why but after checking into making my own coils I think I found the reason. I believe the coil would heat up in the sun and cause the windings to move inside the coil. Concentrics (like the Hot Shot) are much more picky about perfect coil winding alignment than double D's are. That's probably why they made the Hot Shot White...to avoid soaking up heat. The coil was spungy in that it wasn't filled with Epoxy and I believe that was the flaw in the design, causing the windings to move with temperture changes. Too bad...because at one site I popped a few super deep mercs with it before the thing went nuts.

I have a hot shot 12 inch coil that I use on an XL pro. I haven't had any issues. I listed it on fee bay and someone bought it then decided it wouldn't work on their detector. After using it a little more I decided to keep it. I guess the guy did me a favor.

Used to own a hot head coil for my White's Eagle Spectrum. Bought it from the company that was selling it saying it was "The best coil for almost all metal detectors".

Used it for a few hours and then threw it in the trash. I could have sold it to someone else but I did not want to take someone's money with the trash it was.

Boston's got some good info on the Ferret line's history, and since this thread on the Ferrets is linked to in the coil sticky, I wanted to link his post here for anybody investigating these coils to be able to easily find...
