I have just purchased an Explorer II as I also have a Whites DFX. I am trying to figure out the Exp II. I would like to find a chart of ferous cond that I can use to see w3hat I should dig and what I should not. I can see that there is a big learning curve and I bought this because everytime I asked which was the better detector the answer was the type used by the person asked. Thanks any help appreaciated.
 
The Exp II is really rather simple once you get the basic settings down. Cody has some great posts but he tends to go over the heads of most of us and can get confusing. He is on an upper level but most of us don't need to know all of that information so sift out what you can absorb and leave the rest for the techies.
Best thing you can do is get Andy Sabisch book "Mastering the Minelab Explorer, X & XS" I am sure some of the dealers on these forums have them. Good luck and use the old KISS method of learning.

Seems like you have an experienced explorer user and he says its the best so indeed perhaps he would be your mentor for some hunting trips.Surely would cut down on your learning process. Personally would not advise switching back and forth with the DFX lest you really get confused...Some Whites fellows do well with a DFX, but I feel an Explorer is the superior machine and if you have a patient mentor will learn that quickly....as facets fall into place...

Hear are some tips that may help.
The tones between the two machines are very similar if you are use to tones. High tones for good targets and low to very low for iron. The tones go from low to high when in ferrous based on ferrous content in the target. If you use Conductivity for tones then the tones go from low for poor conductivity to high for high conductivity.
The digital dispaly indicates ferrous and conductivity so a sivler quarter would read around 0 Ferrous and 31 for Conductivity. The digital display would read 0/31.
The crosshairs on the other displays indicate both the ferrous and conductivity. So 0/31 would be the upper right of the display with a crosshairs at that location. A crosshairs at the upper left would be 31/31. This indicates the metal if highly ferrous and very conductive.
Iron Mask is another mode of detection. IM-16 is similar similar to accepting all VDI numbers. IM-16 to 0 is similar to rejecting negative VDI numbers. If you only accepth postivive VDI numbers it would like the iron mask at 0 and indicated by the left half of the screen being rejected. Any black area on the screen display area is a rejected area or similar to rejecting a VDI number. Any clear area is the same as accepting a VDI number.
The DFX will accept or reject 191 notches or VDI numbers. The Explorer will accept or reject 961 notches. This means the display for acceptance and rejection consists of a 31 by 31 matrix. Each dot in the dispaly matrix is a notch that can be accepted or rejected. The Explorer has 31 tones and can be either ferrous or conductivity but not both at the same time. The default setting is in the back of the Owner's Manual and is Conductivity for tones.

Forget the DFX.
Just use the Explorer.
Use a factory preset for a few weeks until you get a feel for the detector.
I have used explorers for 5 years now and find a few bits and pieces using a advanced proegramme.
BUT, a friend of mine uses the factory default and just changes the Sensitivity to manual and runs it as high(generally 24 to 32) as he can get away with depending on the land he is detecting.
Also the threshold to suit his hearing.

Basically drop the IM a little, raise the sens. some, and dig. That's it, that's all.
 
You are correct although I would increase Audio Gain above 5. You sure get a much stronger sound for deep targets if the sound is not modulated.
It can get a little tough in heavy trasn at IM-15 or IM-14. I feel like IM-6 at the factor presets is not as much ferrous I want to hear. I have found goodies that would be rejected at -6, I think Glenn uses -10 in heavy trash.
I have done a lot of searching in the learn mode to see where the iron hits and most is at -15 or -14.
Not a lot goes on between -13 to -11. I start seeing some pretty good activity at -10 to 0 and then into the nonferrous area. I am very comfortable that not much of anything is going to be missed at -15 or -14. The problem with a mask from -13 to 0 is the threshold gets a little shaky at times. It is nothing that cannot be handled and is site dependent.

I have had my gain at 10 since day one. I believe most of the other guys I know also have it that way. 6 or 7 of them for sure.
