Felt good to swing the GT again

Rick(ND)

Well-known member
This has been the first time this year because of health issues and was able to swing for a hour before I was not able to get up and down. My arm got a little sore and neck started to bother me too being this is the first time i swung a GT since last summer. Went to a spot at a old school that has been worked to death by others, but I like these as there is not a lot of new coins to worry about and can concentrate on the weak and odd signals which is where the good stuff is. Set the sensitivity at 11 o'clock position and with the slight threshold in iron mask on and disc and seen where it was almost a solid null with the iron in the ground, so I slowed my swing up and listen to what ever tones I could find. Got a few false signals as i seen when I came at a different angle they were then a null and couldn't get them to repeat in more then one way, so i didn't dig them as it is hard to get up and down. Got a squeaker that read 176-177 and was repeatable if I move the coil slow and when I moved it fast over just that small area it started to sound better. Just for the heck of it I switched to auto sensitivity and got nothing at all, tried 3 o'clock position and still nothing at all, went back to me 11 o'clock position and got it back again, but faint and weak. at 176-177 that is a new penny, a older wheat in the teens or a IH penny normally, but being it was deeper I didn't expect a new penny, but you never know, so I felt a old wheatie or a IH penny. Dug down the lenght of my Lesche a plug and went in the hole with my S-1 Probe (that is the best accessory for the Sovereigns) and seen it was till in the hole and was a weaker reading so i went down another 3 inches and it got louder and felt it was about 2 more inches down. Took out a little more dirt and it was in the dirt now, so went though it and seen there was a wheat penny with a date of 1919. Got a couple new pennies and a new nickle that read right on 144-145 that was down 4 inches, then a nice 180 that wasn't that deep, but there was a null on each side of it, so felt it was a coin between to pieces of iron and was surprised as when I dug a plug I seen the edge of a dime and it was silver in color about 3 inches deep, so my first silver for the year a 1964 rosie. When it was in my pouch I swung the coil over the area and it was just a null of the iron, so I felt others missed this dime because their detectors probably averaged in the iron with the dime and gave a trash reading. This is why I love how the Sovereign works with the iron mask on and by going slower you are able to hear the good targets close to iron.
Picked up a few new coins, but nothing special and dug a few iffy ones I felt were trash, but not a 100% sure so I had to check them out and they were some beaver tails and a couple pieces of lead. Over all only 1 or 2 of the targets I dug i felt were good that turned out was trash items, so felt I had a good average today even though I haven't use a GT for a while, but it felt good to be swinging a GT and hearing that familiar tones i love to hear.

Hi Rick,

I'm very glad you got out for a little while today. You go out to a well hunted place, and find older coins that most of us might not find in a day or two. It is good seening you get out and hope you can do more soon. Cya later-Mark

Rick, great hunt and post.I'll probably get out with the Sovereign today.Like most people lots of work and chores to complete this time of year a search with the Sovereign would be a nice break. Thanks Ron

Good hunt, and I too like to dig shallow coin signals that are mixed in trash as they could be old coins others missed. Many times I won't dig any thing shallow unless it's hard to get a good signal from due to trash.

you located a couple of nice finds and pulled silver right out of the iron fire.

Rick, From one dirt fisherman to another, I hope your health and body grows stronger with every passing day and your able to get out there and pull up those great finds.Congrats on getting back into the swing of things.Tom

Good finds for the first time out this year... you did way better than me.
I went back to the home site where I found the two Barber dimes a couple of weeks ago and searched for about 2 hours, but didn't manage to find any coins.
I did switch over to manual sensitivity for some of the hunt and did some experimenting with checking various iffy signals, but all turned out to be deep iron bits and nails.
I did get a somewhat good signal that turned out to be a section of chain that had only three links in it.
It is very dry around here now and that may have had effected my results as I still think there are some coins left here yet to be found.
I haven't given up on this site just yet and will go back after some rain.
Felix

Rick thanks for sharing , i may try those settings , i also got out and the spot was very trashy i will have to put on the 800 coil but you hit silver and thats really good .

Hi Rick, thanks for the interesting post and congratulations for the silver. I learn something every time I read your posts and it's good to hear about your latest hunt. Hope you keep at it. I went back to a little old park in one of the oldest settlements in N. America on the Mexican border a couple of days ago where I had found an early 1900's silver British 3 penny coin. It was hot and I was a long way from home and could only hunt an hour or so but did manage a 1970's copper penny, a nickle but can't read the date yet for the dirt until I carry it in my pocket some more and a recent quarter. I'm learning more with the GT and the 8 inch coil and was pinpointing OK in the disc mode iron mask on. I'm actually liking the old bar graph meter. It gives a good ID on high coins and nickles and is giving me a good guess in other non ferrous areas. Good luck to all. James

Even my wife said a couple of days ago aren't you ever going to go metal detecting.I had a lot of work to complete but at least I'm threading water now and got out for a couple of hours today.Went to a state park in my area and searched where the old park entrance use to be.I searched the grass islands and the ground didn't seem to be disturbed.Anyway found a couple of wheat's and a 1953 Roosevelt and a 1942 Mercury. The best part I found another productive site for this season.By the way my Cen Tech based meter worked well..Again Thanks for the motivation. HH Ron
