I bought a used Infinium 3 or 4 years ago and I'll be the first to admit I did not give it a fair shake. I'm in highly mineralized Arizona ground and took it to a creek filled with the bits and pieces of 150 years of mining activity.

What didn't I like?

The sound. There was no crisp "high/low" or "low/high" reports - it all sounded like one continuous wail or groan either starting high pitched or low pitched, then trailing off.

Disappearing targets. It happened several times, a cross checked good target that disappears after several shovels of dirt are removed (removed dirt scanned)

Unstable lower shaft. The 14" stock coil never felt sturdy, it seemed to rattle in the lower shaft.

With all this said, another used Infinium has popped up for sale in town at a good price and I'm conflicted as to whether to give the unit another shot. Could a couple of satisfied Infinium owners jump in and just comment briefly on:

1. depth you've been able to obtain in mineralized ground using either the 10x14 coil?

2. depth you've been able to obtain in mineralized ground using the 5x10 coil?

3. whether or not the unit is strictly a gold machine, or have some used it exclusively as a relic machine?

All comments appreciated. Again, I'm not posting to knock the unit, I'm simply conflicted whether or not to give it another try.

A used unit purchased 3 or 4 years ago sounds like one of the early units.
The later units run better as some improvements were made over time.

There could have been an issue with it because It should have given you more distinct tones from what was mentioned.
The early coils had different shielded cables which caused some problems that have since been resolved.

If you buy a used Infinium, you should definitely contact Garrett with the serial number to see if any updates need to be made to that specific unit.

I've read other posts were used ones were purchased that had some technical issues not known at the time. Once they were checked and sent to Garrett the detectors came back working properly.

So, it's really hard to tell why you had those issues, but many hunters swear how good the Infinium is at relic hunting in very heavily mineralized hot ground.

I use mine beach hunting in very bad black sanded areas without any problems.

I wish you luck with whatever brand or model you choose!!!

Some say the Infinium LS is designed for Prospecting, they are correct.
"Sales Prospecting" is a type of Prospecting just like "Gold Prospecting".
I shall not talk the Infinium LS up nor down, to me it's just a tool used to detect metal with, any type of metal.
In a roundabout way I also use it to find gemstones.
Depth with eider 10x14 or 5x10 coil is good but very setup, location and user depended.
Slop in lower shaft is dead easy to fix.
My Infinium dislikes: It's slow to react and the High/Low or Low/High tones makes it even slower to use especially on shallow items.
I'm not fanatic about the "All Weather or All Terrain" saying, I choose the location to hunt at and a pleasant weather to hunt in.
It works for me.

Yeh my Infinium is smooth as silk. I use it for mainly prospecting and relic hunting. My lower shaft doesnt wable to me as Garrett beefed up that shaft couple years ago. The stock coil is fairly heavy, Id recommend the mono coils as they are very light. Got some great civil war relics with mine also at good depths on tiny brass items. Dont have the 10x5 coil, Ivan has one and seems to do great with his. WAY TO GO ON THOSE PICS IVAN, by the way!! Nice nuggets and gold rings, geez, never saw those on the Aussie Infinium forum, very nice!!

Check the serial number on that used unit with Garrett to see what year it was made. You want one within last 2 years as they have the newer coil wires. Maybe you were just hitting a ton of targets out there in the desert with all that old timer junk around. Mine goes beserk in areas with targets everywhere, i just go somewhere else.
