Feed Back please--mx5 whites vs. f-5 fisher:help:

Hello Gents:Can anybody tell me which is the best detector if you had your choice----------MX5 BY WHITES VS. FISHER F-5?Need some feed back please.

since Fishers are all owned by/made by First Texas Products, which also makes Bounty Hunter and Teknetics - I'm not too sure about them anymore. Personally I'd prefer Whites, Garrett, Minelab, or Tesoro.

This is a tough question. I think the MX5 is one of White's hottest detectors that never "got the love" it deserved. Maybe because it looked like some of the cheaper Whites detectors. But, don't be fooled by it's looks as it is very deep and accurate. I was told by a factory employee that it had "a MXT hyper circuit".I would pick it over a MXT or DFX. I sold my last one to a buddy who detects with a bunch of FBS detectorists and he holds his own. Fast, deep, accurate, long battery life, and large assortment of coils.

I currently have a F5 and it is one of my all time favorite detectors.Over the last two years, I have split time with the F5 and Safari and I found more silver with the F5. Not quite as deep as the MX5, but an easy detector to get maximum results. A large easy to see display with all adjustments right in front of you. Extremely accurate and fast. I never had much luck with the stock 10 inch football coil, but found the 11 inch dd to really help the depth. I have the 10 inch concentric, 11 inch dd, and a NEL Sharpshooter for the F5 and now just leave the NEL coil on it. If there is one drawback with the F5 is it's battery configuration, it takes 9 volt batteries which are expensive. You can get 25 plus hours on it's two 9 volt batteries which is about the same as the MX5 with it's less expensive AA's.

It would be hard for me to pick the better detector between the two. Both are in the same price range so I would pick the one that you can get the better deal on.

I read your post. Fisher Detectors have done nothing but move forward under First Texas ownership. With excellent detecting abilities.
Nothing wrong with the detectors you named either. In fact their excellent choices... It's just you seemed to "imply" because F/T owned Teknetics, and Bounty Hunter too. Fishers maybe weren't worthy of purchase.
Teknetics has won awards..Bounty Hunter has improved in leaps and bounds in performance under First Texas ownership.
Your always welcome to post your opinion..but do so with facts. Not veiled innuendo's..or drive by shots.

I use them in my pinpointers, they work great, and never buy a 9v again.

+1. Well said, Elton.

The F5 is a lot smarter than I am and is easy to set up with unlimited selections. You can't ask for a better value than the F5. I've never owned a whites so I can't say on how well it performs.

Having never owned, or used, the Fisher F5, I can't give you any input on that machine. I would expect it to be similar to other Fisher machines though – light weight, easy to operate, fast, and deep.

I do own the Whites MX5 though, and can say that I absolutely love it. It is light in weight, fast, deep, and weather proof (it will take the rain, but you can't dunk it). The MX5 is a talkative machine; it kind of farts and burps and spits a bit and it is meant to be ran that way. You can quiet it down, but you will lose some depth. Think of a top fuel dragster up at the line: it's a cacophony of noise until someone stomps on the go pedal; then it's all muscle - making beautiful music.

Whites has said that the MX5 is a hot rod in disguise, and I believe they're correct. It is simple to operate – having only three programs (coin & Jewelry, beach, all metal) plus pin point. Discrimination is by segments; I tend to run mine in C&J with no discrimination. I run it in 8 tones, but there are other options (1, 2, 4, I believe, but can't be sure because I never use anything but 8 tones).

It loves nickels (they usually read 19) but they can creep up a bit in the number and you'll miss them if you refuse to dig pull tabs (usually 20 – 23 or so). Thanks mostly to the stock concentric coil, I don't have a lot of confusion between quarters and screw caps.

Some don't care much for the noise of the machine, and there were quite a few who complained about the location of the headphone connection. Neither bothers me in the slightest. I do wish it had the capability of notching in/out individual target numbers (verses group notching). The MX5 automatically tracks the ground; there is no ability to lock tracking. That lack of ground lock is probably the biggest issue most people had with the MX5. I haven't had an issue with that thus far, but I would prefer to have the ability to lock the tracking (just in case).

I can't say which is the better machine. I do think the MX5 is more closely matched (performance wise) to the F70 (than it is the F5).

If possible, you should swing both machines (and a few more besides those two) to get an idea of which machine is the best for you.

I also think that no matter which machine you choose – Fisher or Whites – you'll be choosing an awesome machine. It's just a matter of choosing the machine that speaks to you, and then learning that machine as best as you possibly can.

Wow, that was lots of feed back guys. Also found that the mx5 has a light for the screen and you can put it in mute mode ,when you lay it down and start digging for an item:thumbup:

Don't have an F5- but I have the MX5 and I love it. My batteries last longer than 25 hrs! I love the 8 tone feature for coinhunting -the 1&2 tone features for depth. I think it's the best detector I've ever owned. Sorry I have no personal knowledge of the F5.
