February's Big Copper!

Bell-Two

The weather here in Ohio has been very cold, rainy or snow with just a couple of exceptions since New Years. Today was cold in the morning with a brilliant full moon accompanied by the planet Jupiter off to its upper right a lovely scene for sure. As the day progressed the sun warmed the air a bit so I took the opportunity to get out for a few hours back to the field that has been very good to us. The ground was muddy a bit on top but underneath the mud the ground was iron hard frozen solid. Right off I got a nice little buckle and a few pieces of copper bits and a rifle ball. I got a very solid 12-45 signal and tried to dig it, the ground was so hard I could not get the shovel to penetrate the ground even when jumping on it! I managed to get down about two inches…but the target according to the depth reading was at six inches. So I marked the spot with some broken brick and glass and decided to let the sun work on it a bit as I continued searching for other targets. I went back to find the spot and at first I could not see it…turned frozen muddy soil has the distressing quality of looking all alike. But at last I spied my little cairn of brick and glass and swing the coil over it confirmed it was a sweet sounding target. I decided no matter what I wasn’t leaving without whatever was giving that signal. Twenty minutes of chipping away with the shovel vibrating with each blow got me down to a level that I was able to get the shovel blade in a bit farther and levering with all my strength I was able to pop out a chunk and lo and behold I see the edge of a green disk protruding from the side of the hole.

Working it a bit with my fingers and it comes loose and I had another Large Cent from this field!

It is an 1843, a new date for me and in reasonable shape. It actually looks better in person than the pictures show. A nice find for February in Ohio.

Nice job Tony! You worked hard for that penny.

True it was a bit tough but man the one you dug out earlier was the epitome of determination in detecting!
:please:

12-45 is good number! 1843 is old and it look like in soil for so many years until you found it! :clapping: I want to find a large cent and I don't find one yet! :detecting:

Probably worked almost as hard as the poor guy that lost that penny. Good one Tony
