Features I'd like to see in a mid price detector-Does it exist?

I'd love to spend a long time testing each & every model. But of course I can't do that. But these things all seem to have their own features or "personality" . And different strokes for different folks.

I should be happy with my Troy X2 & just stick with it. It has almost everything I need. But it lacks some of what I "want".

So here's my dream machine specs...Does it exist?

#1 with a bullet-fast response & good target separation-

Lightweight

Manual & auto ground balance w/ readout.

Thresh-hold all metal with VDI #'s

Did I mention VDI #'s??-I saw a "confidence" meter too & if it helps that would be nice,

A user adjustable width notch-not segments but specific ranges on the VDI.

Adjustable volume,tone ID.

And-sigh-waterproof for wading our local rivers. That kinda narrows it to one. I know all the hype is for the AT pro-but after listening to the video I don't know- Even in pro-mode response sounded slow. Also I prefer a thresh-hold all metal for target size etc.. So maybe the waterproof thing is not as critical as the other features. I don't actually swim & usually just get knee deep.

Anyhow-any advice?

achieving all the goals in a mid-priced model.

Actually, even the Shadow X2 falls short in many categories for full versatility. One is that the lower-end of the Discrimination adjustment doesn't adjust low enough for all metal acceptance. Even many models Tesoro offers today, such as the Silver

You know better than I do the terrain I'm dealing with.

Also-I'm not sure I need al the information I asked for.Frankly I'd like to boil the features down to the minimum.

I am using the sound & target size as my main criteria as to dig or not. Being able to make that decision fast & accurately has been the goal. It is when the foil & can slaw come in great quantities that I yearn for more info on the target.

the Gold Bug series may be the choice.Any input on the Gold bug SE & or Pro users would be welcome.

Thanks Monte-you took a lot of time helping me out here. Hope your doing well and digging often.

Carl.

research since it's going to start getting wet in about an hour. No detecting today. :(

The NW's rain. Unending at times, or so it seems, but as I always say, at least I don't have to shovel it. :) A couple more days and I'll be back out detecting. :detecting:

I know what you're saying and I like to keep things rather 'basic' myself. However, it is nice to have some visual information when you want it. It's not always needed, but often wanted.

Yep! Most of the time I just need to have good audio quality, preferring a modulated audio with a quick response and fast enough recovery to enjoy hunting trashier sites. I also like a good PinPoint audio for sizing and shaping on occasion. It's when I get into locations with can slaw (hunting mowed lawns and such at parks and schools) or a lot of foil and other modern trash that I want to have a good functional display. I especially prefer a good VDI read-out to segmented or labeled icons.

I have several detectors around, from four manufacturers, but I usually only take my T2 out when headed to the beach or to 'relic hunt' some open areas, such as plowed fields and such. Most of my in-town hunting this past 7-8 months has been with the Teknetics Omega, and split maybe 50/50 between the stock 10" elliptical concentric and round 5" DD coils. I used the 5" coil exclusively on the Omega for the whole month of September and then into October 2nd or 3rd. That detector with the 5" coil, only, netted me 895 coins in September so it made a great duo to get the job done.

Then came a prototype Teknetics G2 to evaluate, which I did against a Gold Bug SE. Just so you'll know, the Gold Bug SE went through a few (4, I believe) stages of revision as they were refining the Gold Bug Pro (Fisher) and the similar electronics of the G2 (Teknetics). The Gold Bug SE the dealer had, which I borrowed for comparison, worked fine, but there was a difference between it and the G2.

The G2, operating at 19 kHz, was a model I figured would maybe not get the best depth in the Discriminate mode on higher-conductive targets, but I am not always out for depth. I hunt a lot of trashier sites, and I also like to focus on many locations that can offer up lower-conductive targets, too, such as gold jewelry, US 5
