FE coin and pennies

fsdigital12

New member
I've been using FE Coin open screen exclusively lately.

I'm noticing I'm digging LOTS of pennies. Coming from an E-Trac this is tough. lots of 12-41 -12-43 digs as I know silver/Large cents can be in that range.

I know this is the nature of FE Coin......but my back is killing me digging all those pennies.

Any advice on reducing my penny count, but still in the silver range.....? Ground coin mode??

Thanks!

I am using gonehuntings settings and most of my pennies come in at 11-39 one direction the turn and come in at 12-41-43. I'll take as many pennies as I can get, because a lot of the times they are wheaties. I don't think there is a way to discriminate just pennies. You would be missing out on a lot of silver as well. You can discrim 11-39 but that's about it.

On my 3030 clad pennies come in at 12-37,38 copper at 12-41-43. Turn sens. down to say 5 manual. scan the coin you wish to delete the number will lock on the screen ie. zinc press accept, reject twice it's now deleted. try scaning wheats and prior 1981 coppers and see if your 3030 still dects them. If so you are set. If not rescan the clad and press accept, reject one time it is now back accepting clads. Rescan clads, wheats etc to be sure. Reset sens. to your prior setting .this also works on junk items.

If using combined tones, you can set the tone for 43 or 44 (or where ever you want) and up to 50 as a very high pitch. Where most pennies are reading for you, set that bin to a lower pitch setting. You may still get some pennies and may miss some silver on occasion. You will still get the hit, but then it will be up to you if you want to recover the target or not. It might take a little adjusting to satisfy yourself, but just another way around digging some of the things you want to skip........HH

I say dig everything and make sure you don't miss a darn thing! You don't want to miss a good find because you discriminated a penny.

Its not the sounds I mind its the VDI. Silver should read 12-45, 12-46 all day long.... and it's not, I;ve seen Merc's come up as 12-41 in combined FE Coin

Not sure why you think "silver should read 12-45,. 12-46 all day long". As shown in the coin chart I posted shortly after the CTX was first introduced, silver dimes can register from a CO 41 to CO 46, depending on the wear of the coin, soil composition, detector settings, adjacent targets, angle the coin is laying, etc. JMHO HH Randy

My last two Seated dimes were 4-6 inches deep and both were 12-41 I've also had worn Mercs and barbers come in at theses numbers. I would just dig them.

all my silver dimes with the Ctx have hit at 12 39 to 44 mostly 41-42 though with a bit sharper of a tone than copper of the same co numbers wheats hit 37 to 42 in my soil with Fe coin HH

I'm just coming from an E-trac and to me it seemed silver was more obvious. Certainly a higher pitched sound and usually could tell clad from silver.

Like others have said, ya just gotta dig it. And I am, and I'm finding silver :), I guess I jut get lazy and felt it was easier to cherry pick with the Etrac...... I know cherry picking can be a bad idea, but when I'm in a pounded park I usually just focus on deep targets and high numbers....

I agree silver is more obvious sounding with the etrac.
Nothing wrong with cherry picking either. Not all of us have the time to hunt for hours on end!
