Whats your favorite forums?? Finds,TNet,Depot... Ok,Im bored, give me a break. I seem to always find more info on the Finds forum than the others so it seems it get more users. Although the other forums do have a break down on brands and types of detectors,it seems there is more info to be found on this forum. Im not saying anything bad bout the other forums except maybe the depot as they dont have a Whites forum, which is dumb, for whatever reason.
Do you find one forum better for more info than others?? Well, its important to me. Just getting my feet back on the ground, I like to read what users are saying about their experiences with the machines they have bought and have sold and it just seems there are more people that frequent this (Finds) forum with better thought out explanations of their experiences. You know, its not just I bought X brand and it goes deep and picks up a dime in between a large piece of iron that was broke off a 1890s wood stove and horse shoe,, so you need to get this detector cause I have it,lol. A lot of guys here will tell you the low down and if you PM them, many dont mind taking up the time to tell a bit more.
I have two Whites...M6 and a XL Pro and need to learn those,I know. But, I do want to expand but not just yet. I have a few places loaded with trash and am really interested in any machine any brand thats good in that type of site. Its difficult to hunt in those sites, takes a lot of patience. Ok,Im rambling and have done migrated from my original posting subject. Its cold and raining so hit me. Maybe Ill just go and read about tabdogs arky barky getting tangled up in the grassroots.
wishing for warmer,dryer days,
John

ive been forumming for a while now, it seems to me finds is best. its a pretty lively crowd in here. theres a huge pool of talent and expertise here, and the people who post here are more down to earth and non-judgemental. i go to other forums to remind myself about how good ive got it here. kinda funny but true! other forums are quick to rank you commensurate on how many posts youve made, irregardless of the content. im not into this for the social scene; i enjoy sharing my little bit of knowledge, and learning about others knowledge in our great hobby. its a great give and take deal here, and i cant say that about a lot of the other forums on the web. i , as well as many others, appreciates the respect given to each other and our hobby here. that means a lot. you dont see that everywhere.

Ha John,

This is about the only forum I ever used except for Smitty's forum. I've started using his forum some and have my two videos there.

I started on this forum when I bought my first Tesoro about five months ago.

I can't compare this forum to others.

I just know I really like it here.

I try not to step on people's toes too bad. LOL

I not a pro or even an experienced MDer but I try to respect people here. I feel like I have friends here. That makes me feel right at home.

Nobody is too green to be respected here.

I remember when I first got here I reported that I could get a signal on a planted quarter in my test garden at 8" with my Cibola. Monte immediately took exception. He didn't want me giving false hopes and spreading bull to others.

The funny thing is I really could get a slight response at that depth. It's almost neutral ground here. But Monte was right because most people can't get that kind of depth.

That's when I decided I was going to read every thing I could find that Monte wrote. That's a ton!!!!!!

Glad I did. He really knows how to hunt. I'm glad when just a little rubs off om me.

But Monte is not the only one who I've learned from. But he got my attention.

I got Tesoro's. Euro Sabre, Eldoardo, Silver Sabre uMax and a Compadre.

Until I got one I thought they were made in Mexico:blink:

That's just us Arkies. You have to excuse us:rolleyes:

I borrowed a line from Tabdog's post for the subject because it fits Gary's Findmall forums pretty darn well. Gary and I, along with a few others who are still on the forums, got online and on the only detecting forum online in the mid 1990's. That forum was Treasurenet. Marc Austin put Tnet up in late 1994, November I believe, and it was a free for all, basically a battleground for detector wars the first couple of years it was online. Each detector brand and model had it's defenders, and each group was ready for a verbal fight at the slightest perception of a slur against their brand. One particular individual repeatedly offered to meet anyone who disagreed with his choice and settle if physically. If a new guy came on the forum and offered an opinion he was pretty much verbally crucified. There were not a lot of posts about detecting in general, or what anyone found, and no photo posting until we learned how to post them using html.

Gary started the BBS Minelab forum in February of 1997, and while there was a little fussing on it occasionally that BBS forum has grown into a great detecting website with forums for everyone. The other large forum started for pretty much the same reason, the owner was maybe a tad too adamant about how much better his particular brand and model was than anything else and posted some things that evidently wasn't acceptable to the forum owners. One of the detectors I used was the same brand and model he used, and while I agreed with most of what he posted about it I used a little more restraint that he did:). In one aspect, the detector wars were a good thing as they were responsible for the birth of new forums, but thank goodness most of that nonsense is in the past and now most are willing to accept, and help, others regardless of what detector they use. Gary's first forum is in the Wayback archives at http://web.archive.org/web/19971007110452/www.findmall.com/wwwboard/ if anyone cares to look at it. I posted as John(MS) back then and my first post on what grew into the Findmall forums is the 15th post up from the bottom of the forum.

This is the best in my opinion..Lots of great people who are willing to help out at the asking....
They also seem to look after one another's needs....... Just look at the great pricing on the sell forum....
It still amazes me when I post a question on the open forum, how many personal Pm's you get, with good ,solid advice, on the subject you asked about.
You get acquainted with people all over this good old U.S.Of A., and their time, and knowledge, is given so freely, and without any expectations on their part
other than a Thank You.....So to all of you ,Thanks for your great wealth of knowledge, and time, you have given me.

Rick (ND) for example has answered questions and helped me for many years. He's one of the good guys and very knowledgeable.

Thanks for the update.

Good to know a little history. I just woke up one morning and realized there was a better way to learn about metal detecting than searching the manufacturers on the Internet.

I immedietly settled into this forum. Now my whole perspective is from this forum, looking out.

Don't know how good a thing that is:shrug:

But it sure works good for me:cool:

HH,

Brings back old memories of some of the people that used to post here on the Findmall and at that time it was only the Sovereign forums. Most those names we don't see anymore and only a few of us left, but will say this "The Findmall forums are by far the best on the Internet"

I remember when I first started reading the Findmall forums and reading all the good info on the Sovereigns and wanted one. I still have in my file some of the replies on the questions I ask about the Sovereign. At that time you only could buy a Sovereign from a local dealer as none could ship the Sovereign other than Kellyco had exclusive mail order rights. I called them as I wanted a Sovereign, but couldn't get anyone there that could answer any questions for me about the Sovereign. I even ask Gary the Findmall owner if he would sell me one and say I come down there to pick it up, but he was too honest and couldn't do it, so my closest dealer was in Montana and I called him just to see if he would answer some questions, but he never used one as he was more into the gold detectors. Now my only option was to buy from Kellyco or become a dealer here in ND which I became a dealer in the fall of 1996 and loved every minute of it. Meet some great people and got many great people started in detecting like James ND with his Explorer XS and my Buddie Tim who had a great right up in the Minelab info book in 1999 about his finds with the Sovereign XS. I have met many great people on the Findmall forums and learned a lot too and hope to have helped many too with my experience I have had.
By Far the Findmall has been a great asset to detecting for both the ones starting detecting and for us that are experienced with detecting with everyone trying to help one another.
Like to thank all those that keep the Findmall going as it is my favorite forums.

Rick

I'm on 7 forums being Canadian the canadianmetaldetecting.com forum is special very friendly. On the US side there is a wealth of good info on the Find forum and most people are helpful and friendly. Having 50 metal detectors leaves no shortage of forum interest for me. There is bound to be the odd jerk around but that shouldn't reflect on most users of a site everyone has a viewpoint. Who rents the space in my head is up to me. Dan

Gee, that all seems like a real long time ago, but on the other hand it doesn't. Time sure does zip by when were having fun. :)

Mr. Bill

Reading your post, and I remembered I still had a book on the Sovereign that was very popular then. " "Tips For Success" using the Minelab Sovereign & Excalibur by Dick Noel ".

I think this was a book that everyone bought at the time. Certainly goes back a few years.

Mr. Bill

I like Friendly Metal Detecting Forum and Find's Treasure Forums. I participate at Friendly more, but read through both forums religiously.

I don't like TreasureNet very much, mainly because it seems there's allot of BS that's posted over there, primarily in the Today's Finds! section. I usually go over there for a good laugh.

I have frequented Collectors Universe since 2001, as I am a part time numismatist (coin dealer) and have been in numismatics for 31 years. As the site is hosted by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS, the top coin grading service), it is naturally a coin site first and foremost, though there are Sportscard and other collectibles forums there. They have a Metal Detecting Forum there, too, and I've been its quasi-official "ambassador" and "cheerleader" for years. It's a smaller forum than any of these here, but it's a tight, friendly community, nonetheless, and is far more active than it was in the days when I first posted there.

Speaking of small-but-friendly, I have my own detecting forum, called Lord Marcovan's Treasure Territory, on 24hourforums.com. It's fairly new and still pretty tiny, but it's my TH-ing post HQ where I put all of my TH-ing stories (and of course encourage others to post theirs). LMTT is about ALL kinds of TH-ing, not just metal detecting. Though coins are #1 for me and I am primarily a coinshooter when I treasure hunt, I also do relic hunting and I hunt fossil shark teeth occasionally. I would love to hear from folks who search for old bottles, arrowheads, meteorites, gemstones, gold nuggest, etc- just about all aspects of treasure hunting, particularly the less common ones.
